How many, how powerful a gun do you need and how much ammo?

Posted on 12/06/2015 6:35:04 PM PST by Jim Robinson

Hard to say. How many and how powerful were the guns used to bring down the two Muslim terrorists in San Bernardino?

What if it is just you standing in defense of your family?

.500 Nitro Express, if it’s good enough for an Elephant it’s good enough for a muslin. Better hit the first time though, you might not want to take that second shot!

To make a fight out of it at a Christmas party invaded by enemy infantry the 1911 will do with a couple of extra mags. Sgt. Basil Plumley proved it to be a workable concept, as did Sgt. Alvin York.

I used to carry a 9mm. Then I read a news article (on Free Republic) about a 92 year old fellow, minding his own business in his own house. A nut job with a baseball bat broke in ans started beating on the 92 year old. The old fellow managed to place three 9mm rounds in the chest of the bad guy.

The coroner said any of the three rounds was destined to kill the thug. While bleeding out the thug was able to almost kill the 92 year old, then stagger a half a block down the street before keeling over, dead.

People can be high on drugs or religion and not even notice they're being shot, or ignore it. I consulted a friend who was in the Army when they taught officers how to do a mounted (horse) charge with a sword.

He told of the Phillippean insurection, when the Muslims were attacking our troops. They dashed into a file of troops walking in the jungle or tall grass and used machetes to hack our guys up. Three of our guys could empty their issued .38 revolvers into the Muslims before their adversary would bleed out and die.

The Army recalled the .38s and re-issued single action .45 Long Colt revolvers. One of these slow moving, but large rounds anywhere in the center of mass, and no more mister machete or basball bat guy, rapist, etc.

This is also a friendly round for the shooter. With bullets moving at 900 feet per second, rather then over 1500, as many handgun rounds do, there is very little recoil or muzzle climb. It's a push against your hands and wrists, rather than a painful rap.

I have an aversion for anyone in my family, friends, or myself being on the receiving end from Mr. Bad Guy.

Taurus makes "The Judge", so named because so many judges carry it. They have all manner of them, black, stainless steel and polymer. They even have them with pink grips. How more embarrassing a way can you think of for a rapist or murder to die?

The Judge also handles .410 shotgun shells! Two and a half inch or any three inch, depending on the gun you get. I've found the buckshot and slugs to not have bad recoil, birdshot or rabbit shot raps you a good one, making one think before firing another.

Winchester makes a .410 shell, PDX specifically for the Judge. Depending on 1 1/2" or 3", it has 3 or 5 .30 caliber pellets, backed up with 12 or 15 BB pellets. I patterned them from car window distance if you were in a car, and found it to fill the window area, shredding a huge area of cardboard. Mr. carjacker should leave you alone.

Bond firearms makes several derringers chambered the same as the Judge, so you only have to carry one ammo. All are double barreled, stainless steel. I prefer the Defender with trigger gaurd as you can drop it in your pocket (or purse). It weighs the same as the polymer Judge.

To complete the outfit, Taurus makes the Circuit Judge, a rfile/shotgun using the same revolver action as the Judge handgun. A complete survival outfit, good for any game in North America.

> A man with courage and a .22 stands ready better than anyone with an arsenal and no fortitude to use it in defense of self and/or family.

I went on an op in 1970 to take a high ranking enemy officer prisoner. They made us give up our M16s and issued .22LR pistols with silencers to us in their place.

It’s all we really needed.

Very true.

Which is also why most nominally proficient gun owners have multiple weapons, and select the specific tool needed for the situation at hand.

Might be my various short and long 22s, might be my 38, might be my Remington 1100.
I kept my 25 in the fridge, when it wasn't holstered on my thigh.
That was the tiny hold out gun, barely better than a butter knife, but better than nothing at close range. I know how to use a knife for offense, but knives suck for defense.

I didn't much care for my 9mm, and a few of my “rifles”, because of the kickback and the long travel distances with the close proximity of my sleeping neighbors.

Before anyone discounts my opinion, you should understand that I am very much aware that all the weapons that were listed on my USAF PCS travel orders have been common knowledge to all interested parties, both foreign and domestic, for several decades.

If they come for me, remember that none of my weapons have ever been stolen or “lost”.

Except that one canoe trip....LOL

I can tell you that there are people who have never bought a firearm before buying now.

I am one of them. Do any gun ranges let you try them out?

The Judge is a fine weapon.

My point is being a small concealed at all times.

If it is a .22 hollow point. Take out the nose.

That will do it. Nobody likes getting hit in the nose.

Does your Mosquito jam if you use anything other than CCI Minimags?

Yes. It must be CCI mini-mags.

That other crap I shoot from my 45 year old Marlin.

Good Question.

Most ranges have a rental wall filled with various firearms.
You should rent several and see what you like, I advoided some buying mistakes this way.
At this link is a picture that shows a typical rental wall behind the counter. Full autos on the left

My point is being a small concealed at all times.

For which I prefer Bond Derringers in .45 long colt or Winchester PDF, depending on where I'm going.

Crowded people places, Long Colt for hopefully hitting bad guy only.

Away from many people, PDF.

XA on a Mosquito is horrendous. Get the SR 22 from Ruger. There is a mag extension which expands them to 15 rounds.

I just have to defend myself! Being alone at home makes a difference.

Trouble will be met with my “JUDGE”...best of 2 worlds for me and not hard to store or use at home.

I like the flexibility of the ammunition too.

Ask Cabelas to put you on a list.

They pissed me off 2 years ago when 250 here and there became available.

I had bulk orders in the hopper. I got 500 for 22.50 x 4.

Sometimes a phone call is in order.
