My go to semi auto is a SCAR17 7.62 which I have several thou rounds. My SHTF weapon is a Barrent M-82A1 semi auto BMG 50 Cal which I have only a few hundred rounds for since they are $4 apiece.

Are you saying there were three members of a drug cartel in Paris? If they took them out it’s because they weren’t being shot at yet.
If I’m in a place with a lot of people and two guys start shooting others I’d try to take them out. And hopefully they wouldn’t start shooting at those who are carrying.
I have no problem with that but the idea of possible survival might a strong deterrent to defensively using your pistol in a mass shooting where you are greatly overmatched.

I’m pretty much limited to what I Have on hand, what I use would depend on circumstances.
Close up, 16 gauge shotgun and #1 buckshot.
Medium range, .22 rifle or pistol, preferably hollow point.
Medium to long range and a little time to be picky, .243 Mauser with scope.
If I can get some loads before it’s needed, I have a .50 cal muzzle loader I’d like to try out too. Close range it should do pretty well too.

They were not wearing body armor, it was tactical gear. Vests or jackets with lots of pockets for magazines. No body armor.
Unless someone has found out and reported something different since yesterday...
