Trump hits Scalia over comments on black students

Donald Trump says Justice Antonin Scalia's comments about black students performing better in "slower-track" universities are "very tough" to African-Americans.

"I thought it was very tough to the African-American community, actually," Trump told CNN's Jake Tapper in an interview that aired Sunday on "State of the Union."

"I don't like what he said," Trump added. "No, I don't like what he said. I heard him, I was like, 'Let me read it again' because I actually saw it in print, and I'm going -- I read a lot of stuff -- and I'm going, 'Whoa!' "

"We've hoped and prayed for a solid Constitutional conservative. Remember how excited the forum was for so long, anticipating Cruz would run for president? Well, it happened. And some of us promptly threw him aside for a liberal celebrity.

If we don't wake up, we will have a disaster on our hands, and we will deserve everything we get."

It's hard to disagree with any of that. I'm not sure Cruz can win a national election, and I don't agree with all his policies, but at least there is no doubt he's an actual conservative and not a Johnny-come-lately who's relying on bluster and overkill, and who might even be some sort of liberal Trojan Horse.

We need to pray for protection for ALL our leaders.

There are those hell bent on destroying us and they are not in positions of power in the US, not to mention the muslim hordes who are trying to bring us down.

Come Lord Jesus.

The bottom line is if people actually wanted a conservative, the record hows Ted Cruz is that guy and they would vote for him. His record is far and away the best since Reagan.

But all these so called conservatives do not want that. They want to hear pretty words and refuse to hear words with facts. That is fully a liberal thing to do. It is what liberals do. It is what the same people trashing Cruz mock liberals other than themselves for.

They trashed anyone not supporting Romney and now history repeats.Mitt told them he was going to do all these conservative things. Less than 24 hours after losing the election, he reverted fully and has since done nothing but attack and undermine conservatives.

Just like his supporters did. Just like they are doing with Cruz now.

When Sarah Palin was looking at a run those same people that screamed bloody murder for Romney did all they could here and elsewhere to trash her. Regardless of ones opinion on Palin, she is and was far more conservative than Romney or ANT of the other candidates running.

Did these ‘Conservatives’ side with her?

No.

Did they side with they guy sent Schmitt and Nicole Wallace out to torpedo her?

You bet they did.

History is what it is. I didn’t make it up.

Scalia is wrong in the sense that the ‘problem’ has been addressed and now there are slower track curricula, or majors, more so than slower track universities. And most all universities have made slower track majors available for slower track students with a wide variety of “______ studies” majors available.

And general dumbing down and grade inflation has created further ‘opportunities’ for slower track students. The problem has progressed beyond whether a particular student is qualified to attend a supposedly faster track school.

Steve, I'm not worried about Cruz's ability to win the election. He was regarded as a sure loser when he ran for the Senate; he had almost zero name recognition, and he was going up against a popular, wealthy, self-funded candidate. Yet he won, and handily.

Cruz's ability to connect with people is very much underrated. He can go in depth with college students about the Constitution, and switch gears to discuss video games. He has a gift for persuasion, which translates into "selling" conservatism to folks who don't understand its value.

I agree that we should pray for Scalia. But I don’t think Trump’s remarks upset him. Scalia is a brilliant man, and a sharp one...I suspect he’s had Trump’s number all along.

Scalia was correct but he stated it in a way that when quoted out of context does look really bad. He’s a judge not a politician, but when you say “African-Americans” would do better at a “slower-track” school, without qualifying which particular group of African-Americans you’re talking about, you sound like a racist. What he meant was that affirmative action causes those African-Americans who would’ve probably done well at U of T to go to Harvard and Yale and those who would’ve done better at El Paso to end up at U of T. That’s a plain truth borne out by the numbers. But it’s not true that African-Americans are somehow congenitally incapable of succeeding at U of T. That’s a also plainly false borne out by however many black students have succeeded there and at other even more competitive places nationally.

It’s history. People can bitch all they want. But thats how it has gone down. Every word of it. We all lived through it right here on FR and watched it unfold in the media from here.

People can deny it till their blue in the face. Doesn’t matter who they are, or what Radio show or whatever ‘conservative’ claims they have/make for themselves. Doesn’t change the truth.

Don’t kid yourself. trump says “I don’t like what he said.”

He is voicing publicly disapproval of what a Supreme Court Justice said during oral arguments in a case about affirmative action. Scalia was explaining one reason affirmative action is bad. Does trump want to defend affirmative action?

I think trump’s inner liberalism is peaking out from his faux-conservative skirt.

Between this and calling Cruz a maniac, Trump is going to lose a few points.

And if they put Trump in office and he reverts to his core liberalism-—which he WILL do-—they’ll run around blaming everyone and everything but themselves.

I agree that Cruz is far more affable than the MSM give him credit for, which is why the MSM are trying to poison public perceptions of him before they have a chance to hear and see him for themselves.

Agreed. The simple fact remains that we can't call ourselves conservatives if we're going to pay lip service to principle for three years and abandon it in the fourth for whatever shiny, loud thing pops up.

We've hoped and prayed for a solid Constitutional conservative. Remember how excited the forum was for so long, anticipating Cruz would run for president? Well, it happened. And some of us promptly threw him aside for a liberal celebrity.

If we don't wake up, we will have a disaster on our hands, and we will deserve everything we get.

History always repeats. The man opened his campaign saying “Sorry Conservatives”. It is what it is. If people want to pretend that means something other than what he said, so be it.

He blamed Pam Gellar for Texas’ Muslim thing. He just called Cruz a mainiac and complained about him speaking the truth about mitch on the Senate floor. He has not hidden his positions. If people choose to pretend they are not what they are, they have nothing to complain about.

Does trump want to defend affirmative action?

He already has.

"I'm fine with affirmative action. We've lived with it for a long time. And I lived with it for a long time. And I've had great relationships with lots of people."

The larger pic IMO is Trump starting to triangulate for the general election. It probably also shows closer to where he is on the SC dial: more conservative than Roberts, but less conservative than Scalia. Some debate as to whether Thomas is less conservative than Scalia, but that’s probably not as relevant as pointing him somewhere less than 9 out of 9 on the SC conservatism scale. Sounds to me like he’s probably about an Alito, but he still needs to play to the base, so he has said Thomas.
