When Donald Trump could not answer Hugh Hewittss question on the nuclear triad during the fifth GOP debate Tuesday night, Sen. Marco Rubio (R., Fla.) was kind enough to take the time to explain what the nuclear triad was to him and any other Americans who may not have known.
Trump was asked to offer his opinion on which leg of the nuclear triad, decried by many as outdated, he believed was most crucial to update. The Republican frontrunner did not appear to understand the topic.
In his original answer, Trump said it was important to have a strong leader with sound judgment during perilous times. He then trailed off to talking about opposing the Iraq War and how important limiting nuclear proliferation is. The response did not touch on Hewitt's question, so he asked again.
"I think for me nuclear â the power, the devastation is very important to me," Trump said in his second attempt.

So was it a gotcha question to expose that Trump didn’t know about the nuclear triad???
Chinese mafia?
I didn’t know about the nuclear triad. You and Rubio are so much better than me.
Does it count the drone-borne, satellite-borne and human-planted assets? I’ll let the CM nukes stay in the Triad....
Yes. He should know, but I don’t really care if he does. I bet he doesn’t now how to do plumbing, but he builds some wildly successful buildings all over the world.
He would not have an issue once fully briefed. I’d rather he be on top of it now, but I don’t really care. The guy is uber-competent.
.
Trump should have known ... it’s been “public knowledge” for 40 years ...
Of course, Donald Trump might have had a “senior moment”, which many of us have sometimes ...
I’m sure that Donald’s getting himself briefed even as we speak ...
All’s well ...
.
I saw the whole exchange, it was an obvious set up to try to make Trump look like he doesn’t know anything. The press tried this once before with some obscure question to Trump.
It didn’t work then, it wont work now.
Can’t help you if you don’t care to try to be informed of basic concepts of defense policy.
Like I said on another thread, this was a major failure of due diligence from a guy who claims to be a great CEO who will "hire the best people."
Either he didn t hire the best people or he failed to learn anything from them regarding the fundamental principle of our NUCLEAR PROGRAM (!)
I am sure I have heard of it. But I had no idea what it was. Of course, everyone in DC knows, so this was a way of trying to say an outsider has no business in government. It is not necessary to know everything if you are willing to get the best advisers and learn from them. Your job as President is to make the big decisions not to control every detail.
The guy is uber-competent.
Sorry, the contradiction is just too glaring.
“Sen. Marco Rubio (R., Fla.) was kind enough to take the time to explain what the nuclear triad was to him”
Fine. And Hopefully Trump was kind enough to explain to Rubio that illegals are already lawbreakers, since Rubio thinks only illegals who break the law should be deported.
LOL.
Realistically, if we don’t build the wall, the triad is not going to matter. America will go the way of Rome.
And the present President would never use it to defend this country.
That scares me far more than Trump stumbling on the nuclear triad.
I’m not sure the logic of the triad even applies anymore.
One “leg”, bombers, is functional in such small numbers that its good only for a few targets at a time, not a general deterrence on its own, which was the point.
That’s the response I had too.
“I don’t know nearly enough about that to comment without first consulting with UNIFORMED military leaders”....answer over.
How many B-52’s and B-1’s are operational?
Triad is so 1950ish...
