A major government announcement could dramatically reduce crashes on our roads.
Equipping the country's cars and trucks with the vehicle-to-vehicle technology, or V2V, will essentially allow vehicles to see each other and warn of a potential danger before a driver know it is there.
The Department of Transportation has now taken a key step towards requiring the technology to be in every car in the U.S., reports CBS News correspondent Kris Van Cleave.

I’ll bet it doesn’t even need to be hacked.
Once the algorithms become known, it’ll be easy to “mess with” other drivers on the road by simply driving a certain way around them.
So then we’ll have new laws against “willfully tampering with a vehicle-to-vehicle system” and so forth.
Just more damn big government “helping” us to a personal-responsibility-free world. Blech.
The basic goal is to make vehicles so expensive that only the Algores of the world can afford them.

I’m down with electronic engine control and chassis stability control. That’s plenty of tech though. I don’t want my vehicle texting while I sleep or while I’m driving it.

If you don’t want your car telling on you while you’re sleeping, turn your garage into a faraday cage. While you’re at it, keep your cell phone and all wireless devices in the garage. Hell, put your bedroom in the garage just to be safe.

My Jeep Wrangler’s door lock froze up this weekend. Went to the parts store to get some deicer. Kid behind the counter told me I should check the fuze. I told him it was purely a mechanical lock. From his look I don’t think he knew they existed.
I like a vehicle where I can run the Climate Controls and Radio controls without taking my eyes off the road or waiting from some digital control to get around to responding to a command.
It’s not even hacks that are the problem. Picture a couple of cars boxing you in and forcing you to stop. A very convenient method to kidnap/harass/murder people.
Does anyone believe the presidential limo will be outfitted in such a manner?
