A YUGE number of conservatives just shredded Donald Trump in the National Review
WaPo ^ | 1/22/16 | Callum Borchers

In their editorial, National Review editors put it this way:

There are understandable reasons for his eminence, and he has shown impressive gut-level skill as a campaigner. But he is not deserving of conservative support in the caucuses and primaries. Trump is a philosophically unmoored political opportunist who would trash the broad conservative ideological consensus within the GOP in favor of a free-floating populism with strong-man overtones.

Paraphrasing a line of scripture from 1 Timothy, Erickson writes this:

We should not put a new conservative in charge of conservatism or the country, so that he does not become puffed up with conceit and fall into condemnation. Republicans have wandered in the wilderness already by letting leaders define conservatism in their own image. Donald Trump needs more time and more testing of his new conservative convictions.

Beck gets specific, citing Trump's previous support for stimulus spending, bank bailouts and auto bailouts as reasons why his conservative credentials are suspect:

When conservatives desperately needed allies in the fight against big government, Donald Trump didn't stand on the sidelines. He consistently advocated that your money be spent, that your government grow, and that your Constitution be ignored. Sure, Trump's potential primary victory would provide Hillary Clinton with the easiest imaginable path to the White House. But it's far worse than that. If Donald Trump wins the Republican nomination, there will once again be no opposition to an ever-expanding government.

After Trump picked McConnell over Cruz? You’re delusional.

I’ve been backing Trump despite his history of being in love with the likes of Pelosi and Obama, but after his embrace of McConnell, I pretty much have had it. I’m at a point where I have no clue as what he will do.

Oh come on, I thought the adaptation of the liberal settled science meme was the most brilliant moment in the editorial. ;)

I don't understand how this is national news,

Only in their minds, another feeble attempt to sway to their (losing) side.

why all the media is reporting on it like any average Joe caucus-goer in Iowa cares about Erick Erickson's opinion.

The media IS the socialist party. The dems are the political wing. Everything they say is designed to make Clinton look good, and the leading republican look crappy.

Also: Beck, Erickson and Kristol opposing you should be considered a plus.

Beck? Bwahahaha. Erickson? has panties in a wad because he is being disobeyed. Kristol? Who did he support in the last 30 years, and when has anything he espoused come to fruition?

That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it. A Trump/Cruz ticket would end them....on both sides of the establishment aisle.

They want Bush and that's that, their whole entire base is against that and 4 years ago Romney, 4 years before that McCain, but they pushed and shoved their loser choices and lost. Now they are losing their base! They seem to be more concerned with democrat votes and illegal votes than their own base. BHO loves his base and does everything he can to keep them in the fold, R's are so freaking stupid.

What delusion are you speaking about now? Trump is smart enough to know how he'll use McConnell to get what he wants. It's called leverage and its clear to everyone that McConnell has none. So he's a useful idiot who will be used to give Trump what he wants.

Its clear that long time politicians and indeed, political junkies, have NO CLUE what they're dealing with in Trump.

It's why I support him.

And BTW - the Trump/Cruz fight....is window dressing with no real substance. When the dust settles, you'll see Cruz supporting the Donald and vice-versa.

Trump plays to win and it is remarkable how conservatives in general, have no idea what that looks like and how uncomfortable they all get when someone does it.

Trump is playing to win and the entire world is freaked. I find this very enlightening, humorous, and troublesome all at the same time. :)

The point is................it was all a lie.

There has never been any love affair.

It was a failed strategy and now they resort to this.

People were trying to make the unbelievable, believable, to people who know better.

Republicans are always conservative at election time, but that disappears when they get to Washington.

Perhaps it was never really there.

I don’t have any illusions that any of these guys can be perfect, not if they operate within the system, but they really don’t even bother with it at all and insult the voters to boot.
