Security is already high at such an event.

Whatever the security environment may have been like at this event, it is nothing compared to the security required for a presidential public appearance. Because of the security entourage that accompanies the President, Obama's presence would have only served to detract from the solemnity of the occasion, irrespective of whether he's the first president in 65 years to miss the funeral of a sitting SC justice or not (a minor historical trinket that is of little moment, insofar as I can see.) And since there was absolutely nothing Obama could have said or done that would have enhanced the event in any way whatsoever, it was just as well that he went golfing so as to avoid ruining the ceremony with his presence.

I'll be the first to admit that Obama gets almost nothing right. But his decision not to make Scalia's funeral all about Obama by interjecting himself into the proceedings stands as one the few things where he's managed to make the right call. I'm willing to give him credit for it, even if others are not, for whatever reason.

So far as I can determine (quick search), Trump was not invited, and since he was not close to the family or the court, etc., I would be surprised if he was invited.
