Brian Sandoval, the centrist Republican governor of Nevada, is being vetted by the White House for a possible nomination to the Supreme Court, according to two people familiar with the process.
Sandoval is increasingly viewed by some key Democrats as perhaps the only nominee President Obama could select who would be able to break a Republican blockade in the...
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Tuesday pledged âno actionâ on any Supreme Court nomination before Novemberâs election, saying the decision ought to be left to the next president.
The White House declined to comment Wednesday for this story. White House press secretary Josh Earnest has emphasized in recent days that the president has not arrived at a short list of potential nominees.
[Republicans vow no hearings, no votes for Obamaâs Supreme Court pick]
The nomination of a GOP governor â albeit one with a bipartisan record â could break that resolve.
Sandoval met Monday with Senate Minority Leader Harry M. Reid, a fellow Nevadan with whom he enjoys cordial relations.
A person familiar with the conversation said that while Sandoval told Reid he had not made a final decision on whether he would accept a Supreme Court nomination, he would allow the vetting process to move forward. Another person in Nevada familiar with the process confirmed that the process is underway.
Sandoval could not immediately be reached for comment.
It is unclear how many potential nominees are undergoing White House vetting for the high court vacancy left by Justice Antonin Scaliaâs death. Obama was seen last week carrying a thick binder of materials on potential picks to review.
Obama outlined his thinking in a guest posting on SCOTUSblog Wednesday: âA sterling record. A deep respect for the judiciaryâs role. An understanding of the way the world really works. ..

$20M so every Nevada child can read by Grade Three. (Jan 2013)
What?! My kids (and most in my area) were reading by kindergarten!
3rd grade?!
That old dog won’t hunt. How can Repubs be racists when we have one Black and two Hispanics running for PREZ???
Centrist Republicans on the SC are at least as bad as the usual Dem tripe.
No, no, no!
The reason you don’t give them a hearing is because we have repubs that will bow down to Obama - stab us in the back. Only the leaders can save us. We must not even have committee hearing. Today I heard 11 members of the Judicial Committee under Grassley signed agreement not to ok appt.
The problem is once you begin hearings they can spin out of your control.
The two best examples I can think of are Clarence Thomas and Ollie North. In both cases the Democrats thought they had them dead to rights. In both cases the subject’s performance turned the tables on them.
That could work both ways.
“Brian Sandoval, the centrist Republican governor of Nevada, is being vetted by the White House for a possible nomination to the Supreme Court, according to two people familiar with the process.”
Ahh.. The Chuck Hagel gambit.
Milktoast... Replacing Scalia with anyone but a strict originalist would be a liberal victory, doing so with someone who might rule with liberals only 50% of the time would be an even bigger victory.
If 0bama is willing to put him on the SCOTUS than he can’t be any good.
“Iâm sad we showed our hand within an hour of the news of Scaliaâs death.”
yes, the smart answer is;
“of course we will give every candidate that Obama wants, a full, complete and thorough review, just as soon as we can schedule it in this busy election year.”
Yeah, if we get any madder we might....oh I don’t know... nominate Donald Trump?
Quisling works too
Exactly.
I suspect that if he was offered, Sandoval would decline. Why go through the trouble when he isn’t going to be seated anyway?
I was surprised to see he’s an Ohio State man.
Doesn’t even know the Harvard Law secret handshake, LOL
Bait and switch.
The RATS have something on this guy.
Sandoval has passed state legislation to hire undocumented Mexican immigrants to replace teachers in the state. I have posted an article on this previously on this site.
Brian Sandoval = Chris Christie Hurrican Sandy redux.
