Trump wants to 'open up' libel laws to sue media outlets
The Hill ^ | February 26, 2016 | Bradford Richardson

Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump on Friday vowed to "open up" libel laws in order to sue media outlets that write "purposely negative" and "horrible" articles about him.

"I’m gonna open up our libel laws, so when they write purposely negative and horrible, false articles, we can sue them and win lots of money," Trump said at a rally in Fort Worth, Texas.

"We’re going to open up those libels laws," he added. "So that when The New York Times writes a hit piece, which is a total disgrace, or when The Washington Post, which is there for other reasons, writes a hit piece, we can sue them and win money."

Controversial political speech is exactly what the First Amendment was intended to protect.

"I'm gonna open up our libel laws, so when they write purposely negative and horrible, false articles, we can sue them and win lots of money," Trump said at a rally in Fort Worth, Texas.

He already can if he can prove actual malice on the part of the writer. Which is something he should know.

I thought this was satire, but it is real. Trump wants to outlaw criticism of his highness. A lot of Freepers don’t mind a thug, as long as they think he is on their side. He is an “alpha male”, and his critics are “wimps” and GOPe.

This crap probably won’t work in the general election, and if it does work, look out.

And campaign promises should be considered legally binding verbal contracts with every person who votes for said promises.

And then he would stack the court to make sure all the cases that made him look bad would be immediately dismissed.

He sure will show all those stupid media hacks that they can't mess with The Donald.

Holy crap, Trump fans can’t bring themselves to criticize him even when he says he is going to restrict political speech to protect his fragile ego. This is nuts.

I am not with him on this.

Can you imagine what the Clintons would have done to Matt Drudge? Obama to Sean Hannity when he started playing the Rev. Wright clips? Etc.

“Media would actually double check their facts.”

Precisely. However I can see why the Cruz supporters would be against this. They don’t let facts get in the way of a good story.

The Big Media should be broken up. No national TV station, that is also a ‘News Outlet’ should have more than a handful of affiliates, and no more than a viewership of say thirty million.

<><><><><

Why stop there?

You want a fawning media? Have Trump nationalize it.

That way he can entirely control the message.

Cuz libel should be legal?

Libel is already illegal. This is just Trump letting his fascist side out for a little air, threatening to use the law to punish anyone who criticizes him - because according to him and his supporters, anything negative about Trump has to be false and misleading by definition!

Just horrible. This is totally consistent with Trump’s attitude to Megyn Kelly and when his lawyers threatened to sue a Daily Beast reporter and “ruin him” last year.

I guess he’ll be packing the court with whoever will roll back free speech. Probably cut a deal with a liberal judge who will do this if he can ban “hate speech” too.

This guy is dangerous, dishonest and megalomaniacal.

Haha, Fox News is made up of so called objective analysts and pundits. Each one of the is on the payroll of one campaign or another.

Many Fox News pundits are on the payroll of foreign countries.

You bet we need to do something about this!

Cuz libel should be legal?

"Negative" and "horrible" does not = libel.

Not that I would expect Trump to grasp the difference.

The problem is the NYT runs an editorial that is totally false (i.e. McCain is having an affair) and the opposing parties run with it.

McCain should have been able to collect big time from the NY Times after that totally made up story during the 2008 election about an affair they put on the front page to ruin him that never happened
