Trump backs down from waterboarding comments, says he won’t ask troops to violate law
Washington Post ^ | 4 Mar 16 | Dan Lamothe and Jose DelReal

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump backed down Friday from claims that he would order the U.S. military to waterboard militants and carry out other acts that violate international law, as the top general in the U.S. military was asked to weigh on Trump’s previous remarks.

Trump, the Republican front-runner, has said repeatedly that he wants to waterboard suspected terrorists, kill the family members of those who carry out terrorism and commit other acts that would leave U.S. troops with a quandary if Trump is elected: Do they follow the orders of their commander in chief, or the Uniform Code of Military Justice that governs their actions?

Water bordering of terrorists is not covered by the Geneva Convention.

US special forces have done it in their training. Trump won't let the media get away with their over-hyped, liberal nonsense without getting called on it.

We can use water boarding and worse, kill terrorists and their families, and anything it takes without violating the law. Outsource and pay through a 3rd party. It’s not complicated.

That’s fine but it isn’t the troops who do the waterboarding, it’s the CIA. Being a presidential candidate I am sure he knows that.

He won’t ask then to violate the law. He will order them to do so. That’s what he said last night. And he said the generals and admirals will submit to his will. Sorry, Donny, but I do not know a single general or admiral who would carry out an illegal order.

Donny Boy is so stupid he does not realize that by saying he would order the murder of family members of terrorists that he has painted a target on each of his family members.

I never saw anything wrong with his “go after the terrorists families” plan ,, the families are the support group that enables the terrorist... I see it as no different than killing “innocents” working in a factory making war material for their army...

Isn't solicitation of murder "violating the law"?

I don’t either but I take this as a wink wink. “Oh, ok we can’t” but no one is gonna stop our troops who do.

There are no international agreements regarding [terrorists] treatment.

Not quite correct.

The Protocol II addendum to the Geneva Convention does cover them. However, the US has never ratified that additional protocol, therefore, it does not apply to us.

Their families, however, are covered by international law to which we are a signatory. They can be collateral damage, but combatants must take necessary precautions, and they may not be deliberately targeted.

If by “excellent,” you mean “not true.” Post #34 addresses what is wrong with his claim.

I wouldn’t disagree with the families, but beyond that, terrorist are just flapping in the wind.

Even if the Geneva Convention were an iron-clad agreement to protect terrorists, if I were president I would ignore it.

If a guy can walk up beside me without waring on a public street and stab me to death, I don’t care what the Geneva Convention says or doesn’t say. It’s preposterous on the face of it.

If a terrorist may have information leading to the prevention of a weapon of mass destruction going off in a highly populated area, you can bet your hind end the GC would be the last thing on my or any other sane person.

I believe that Trump was expressing the same frustration we all do. I do not expect him to break international law on a whim. If it comes down to your or my families lives, I hope he does.

“You are funny. He won’t have to “ask” anyone. They will know how has their back and no. One will get prosecuted. A thing of beauty.”

*************

If you don’t think there are Lib suck ups in the military that would do anything to curry favor with politicians like Reid and Schumer then you obviously were never in the military. They’ll go out of their way to hang someone they can claim committed a “war crime.”

Waterboarding was never illegal until Obama and idiot lefties decided it was. That very procedure led to Bin Laden’s location and death.

Don’t you know? Trump has to support both sides of every issue just to cover his bases.

Exactly. Then when someone says "No, your position is the opposite," he can call them a liar.
