Carl's Jr. HQ Moving From Calif. to Nashville; Press Avoids Saying Why
newsbusters ^ | 03/10/2016 | Tom Blumer

For years, Andrew F. Puzder, the CEO of CKE Restaurants, the parent company of the Carl's Jr. and Hardee's fast-food chains, has been telling the world that while the U.S. government makes life needlessly miserable for businesses, California, where it has been headquartered, is exponentially worse.

This week, CKE announced that it is moving its headquarters to Nashville, Tennessee. A story at the Orange County Register failed to go beyond the company's deliberately non-combative statement to explain why. As far as I can tell, the Los Angeles Times hasn't covered the move at all (I can't be absolutely sure because the paper's search engine is demonstrably horrible). Meanwhile, LA's CBS News affiliate appears to have intentionally omitted their reporter's attempt to cite "the unfavorable economic climate here in California" as a factor contributing to the move from its print coverage of the story.

In June 2013, Puzder told the Wall Street Journal that his chain would not expand in California because the state "is not interested in having businesses grow," noting among many other things that it takes 285 days to get a building permit after signing a lease. This means the chain has to pay rent for over nine months, plus the time needed to build, while not earning any revenues.

To me, Carl’s is a piece of California lore, and a ok burger as well. That said, I would like to take a moment to pitch Springfield MO as welcoming home for In-and-Out Burger should they wake up as Carl Karcher Enterprises did. ;)

California’s collapse is coming. Its so full of hot air politically that’s its demise is inevitable. The signs have been pretty evident of late.

My wife and I just got back from a few days vacation in Tennessee. Friendly, civil folks, genuine courtesy everywhere we went. The only thing we didn’t care for was the 9.9% sales tax on everything.

That’s why. Doesn’t take much to figure it out.

“I amazed that their corporate HQ was in the sleepy little beach town of Carpinteria.”

It was originally in Anaheim close to the home of founder Carl Karcher. Carl’s Jr was about the best hamburger place around back when it was still family owned.

“When I lived in CA, Carl’s Jr. was everywhere.”

They still are everywhere. But after this move by the headquarters, I’m sure we won’t be seeing any new sites popping up. It’s a sad reality of Liberalism here.

Well we here in the Golden Fleeced State has that sales tax and the lovely state income tax that can go up to 20%, not to mention the property and local taxes. Of course, the teacher’s union is putting on the full-court lobbying blitz to overturn Prop 13 so that we can have the privilege of paying more of our fair share in property taxes too.

I believe its that high because there is no state income tax.

You nailed it!

“California is too expensive, too much bureaucracy and too much congestion.”

“Who needs it?”

For a little over a decade Carl’s Jr has been closing older stores versus fighting the bureaucracy needed to keep them open in some California shopping centers/cities. Also, when the employees start acting like owners instead of employees or when cities enact a $15/hour minimum wage.

For awhile the local Carl’s Jr had the Mexican choice of Mexican fast foods. Then they stopped it. None of the employees would tell us why. One day one of their higher up managers was at the store. He told us that a Mexican food store in the shopping center filed a complaint with the city, and the city told them to stop with the Mexican food choices. So rather than waste $’s on legal fees, they just DCed the Mexican Menu choice.

Just makes me more inclined to patronize their stores; plus, I really like their jalapeno burger.

That’s what the locals told me. Plus property taxes average less than $500 for most people, roughly 1/4th of what I pay here in Pennsylvania.

Hardee’s was headquartered in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. Plenty of former employees still there no doubt. Surprised they didn’t go there.
