Question for discussion - Should Cruz Drop Out?
3/16/16 | Self (vanity question to Freepers)

Should Cruz drop out?

I want to throw that question out in a thread for discussion.

I say yes.

Yes because the RNC strategy is to run out the clock and hit the convention without a winner.

They think splitting the vote is their best strategy to dilute Trump's delegate count over the rest of the primary.

I say let the RNC really have it their way and make the rest of the primaries be a referendum on Trump or the RNC.

Their man Kasich vs Trump, one on one.

No one can say that is not fair and clear.

No, as they say in sports. That’s why they play the game.

I love Cruz and give credit to Trump’s ability to empower the only mute minority in the US, the white middle aged male. If the Trump we saw after the last primary had existed throughout this campaign, this would have been a ticket (Trump/Cruz or Cruz/Trump) that would have been awesome in what it could accomplish.

But sadly,I am afraid Trump’s antics make that almost impossible now. Catharsis can be wonderful but only if you don’t cut off your nose to spite your face

I am beginning to think no one on FreeRepublic knows the difference between a contested convention and a brokered convention.

A brokered convention is a GOPe win.

A contested convention is still a delegate leader winner unless something makes him a significantly changed candidate by the time of the convention vs when he won the majority of his delegates. This would have to be something where people that voted for him would be proclaiming that they would have voted differently at the time of the convention than at the time they voted in the primary.

As long as Trump stays the man he has been to date, he is going to win a contested convention. If he doesn’t win, that would be the end of the GOP.

Cruz staying in the race does keep Trump from running to the center or the left...so it can be argued by the GOPe traditionalists that this is weakening him for the general since this is what they argue you should do.

GOPe would be saying to run to the Center or the Left to prepare for the general and unite behind a single candidate.

I would like who ever the candidate to run as a conservative on conservative ideals.

A brokered convention is what everyone fears, backroom deals in a smoke filled room where favors are traded for power. That’s what the GOPe really is hoping for. I don’t think that’s going to work, it will be the end of the party.

If they want to do that, we should all applaud its death.

Here's how Ted Cruz can turn this race on its head:

Make a public pledge that if he enters the convention with less than the majority position of delegates, he will instruct his delegates to support the candidate that has the most. Dare Trump to make the same pledge. Here's what that will accomplish:

1. It guts Kasich. There is no point in his candidacy at that point. Ted Cruz gets the one-on-one he clearly wants.

2. It forces the GOPe to shut up about their favored candidates, and to choose. Who gets the money? The endorsements?

3. It earns him a hell of a lot of respect, and I suspect, votes from those who are sickened about the prospects of smoky back-room deals determining the nominee. He'd at least have a chance at winning outright, which he does not have now.

4. It makes sure he's in the mix of any convention deals. The GOPe will not think twice about shutting him out.

5. It puts real teeth behind his previous statements that he thinks a brokered convention would be terrible for the party.

Does this question even need to be asked or treated with any seriousness? Yes, of course, he needs to drop out now. He should have two weeks ago today at the latest. Most certainly he should today. If he and his supporters have any self-respect or ANY remaining love for the country they are entangling in TPP and North American Unions-—for the rest of us, the remaining patriots, please, Cruz get out of Trump’s way and end your silliness.

Hello......Cruz is out as of last night whether he wants to be or not. He is walking down “The Yellow Brick Road”, locked, arm & arm with Glenn Beck & Carly Fiorina ticking every body off....when the three of say “Good Morning” to the passing folks!!!

Nope.

Cruz should stay in and make ^back-side^ negotiations with Trump for “currently unreleased delegates” of Carson/Rubio/Fiorina/Christie, etc.

I find it VERY “telling” that as the also-rans drop out, they don’t release/designate/re-assign their delegates to any of the remaining candidates.

It makes me think that everyone who droops out is hoping for a brokered convention. What does that say about the “Party”.

Only if he realizes he is not a NBC. Otherwise he has as much right as any to stay in the race and attempt to win. Then - the left will be the ones to take him on for the NBC issue.

He and Trump were at one time considered to be the dynamic duo. That might still happen in the strange political world. Should it? Have no clue. Hopefully, the two are speaking and have studied the alternatives and a winning strategy.

I am so tired of people falling for a politician who gives a good conservative speech, claims to be a conservative and mentions the constitution on end believing that qualifies them to be president.

How many times have we seen a person go on television, give a great speech and people start clamoring that he should run for president. They give no thought to if that person has the wherewithal to actually succeed as the leader of the free world. They only know he gave a great speech, sounding conservative themes and seemed sincere.

Hell, if that were the qualifications for president, I know a lot of people who should run for the office.

After 10 months in the Senate, he decides he/s presidential timber.

Says a lot about the promises he made to his constituents as a Senate candidate.

Didn/t tell Texans he was planning to run for president, did he?

That's a wonderful reason to support the guy with no experience other than supporting democrats.

Constitutional Requirements to be President of the United States (also applies for Vice-President):

1. Be a natural born U.S. citizen.

2. Be at least 35 years of age.

3. Have lived in the United States for at least 14 years to be president. The first requirement has never been legally defined, but rather argued quite a bit. This needs to be legally defined!

Cruz is also being shut out by the eGOP. Cruz and Trump had best join together to defeat the eGOP before they both lose.

I don’t want to see Cruz drop out. From my way of thinking, of the remaining candidates, Cruz is far and away the best one remaining. Pennsylvania votes in 5 weeks. This will be the first time in my life I will have a chance to cast a vote for a candidate I believe in, who has a chance, albeit small, to win.

I don’t think it matters, though, because Trump has it locked up. Short, not short, doesn’t matter. The GOP will consolidate around him at the convention. This contested/brokered convention stuff is nonsense. The GOP has already made their choice, and it’s Trump. I make this judgment based on Kasich, one of their agents. If they wanted to get rid of Trump, they’d force Kasich out, and let Cruz go for it, one-on-one. They don’t want that, because then Trump could win it by himself, or worse yet, CRUZ could win it, and that’s the absolute last thing the elites want.

So, they keep Kasich in. That freezes out Cruz, and gives them leverage at the convention. They won’t drop in Paul Ryan, as that would jeopardize the GOP majority, and all their cushy committee chairmanships. They’ll cut a deal with Trump (behind the scenes no doubt), come on stage, hug, and away we go with Donald Trump as the nominee.

That’s stupid. Kasich is mathematically eliminated.

Dear 20yearsofinternet aka 6monthsoffreerepublic, for the thousandth time, quit LYING about Cruz. He said nothing supporting the BLM or other disruptive protestors.

He criticized Trump, his opponent, for how he handled protestors. Cruz showed by example how he could debate protestors head to head and shut them down.

Trump really does not need supporters like you campaigning for him. For every voter you persuade to support Trump, you chase two away.
