Trump’s Ascent Has Conservatives Wary
Wall Street Journal ^ | May 6, 2016 | Gerald F. Seib

As Donald Trump emerged victorious in the race for the Republican presidential nomination this week, the loudest cries of anguish heard in Washington may well have come from one section of his own party—from those in its conservative movement.

“Conservatives had their party hijacked from them in the 2016 primaries,” wrote Jonathan S. Tobin in Commentary, a leading platform for conservatives. He added: “The consequences for individual liberty and restraint of government power, not to mention America’s foreign-policy interests, will be incalculable.”

Meanwhile, Leon H. Wolf, writing on the conservative site Redstate.com, proposed what many conservatives would consider a radical action, declared that Republicans “must know that there is absolutely no chance that we will win the White House” and are likely to lose control of the Senate as well. As a result, he urged Republicans in the Senate to move promptly to confirm Merrick Garland, President Barack Obama’s nominee to the Supreme Court, on the theory that more liberal nominees would follow if he isn’t approved now.

Conservatives wary?
Only the GOPe. They’re terrified he’ll derail their gravy train.

Seriously? This guy is urging the senate to confirm Obama's Supreme Court pick, and yet he is trying to pass himself off as a conservative? The elitists in DC must be really afraid that Trump will do exactly as he promised and give the country back to the people. The only motivation that I can think of for trying to preemptively entrench an anti-Constitutional Supreme Court is to fend off any action by Trump to return us to being a Constitutional Republic.

Nice. I rarely donate to candidates outside of my state (which is CA, not MD where I live). I may make an exception in this case.

Is Trump a real conservative or is he pretending? Given his record of behavior I am not certain. And his finance guy is a Soros lackey.

Trump's "pattern of behavior" has been remarkably consistent for the last few decades, and there is no reason to think that it will change after he is president. All you have to do is look at any early Trump video on youtube to know that. Trump starts talking at about 2 minutes into this video.

The fact that the finance guy he hired used to work for Soros is irrelevant, as others have already pointed out. Trump hires the best person for the job. That's how it should be. Politicians hire their cronies without vetting their actual qualifications for the job--and that is a big part of why we are in the mess we are in. For example, Obama installed an ideologue to run the Dept. of Justice--how has that ideologue worked out? Seen any justice from the DOJ recently? I know I haven't--I've seen a DOJ more intent on harming people for having the "wrong" ideas than on pursuing justice.

Bottom line: don't give the country to the rats who are destroying it just because we did not vote for the self-styled "principled conservative."

“Guess what, I don’t like the word conservative any more, because it means get your orders and march in step.”

You know how socialism became liberalism because it sounded better, then progressive became the word after everyone figured out what liberalism meant?

We need another word that means conservatives, but is not associated with the Republican Party, that has weakened and twisted the meaning.

I’m finding ALL the articles by ‘conservatives’ worried about how Trump will destroy the conservative brand hilarious - all by pro-amnesty authors. pot, kettle.

The Republicans who’re now opposing Mr. Trump and saying they won’t vote for him, will vote for the Witch, and/or are contemplating a third party run against him are not just indulging themselves in evil, infantile, self-destructive tantrums. Instead, and far worse, their actions are un-American and anti-constitutional. They propose to enable an habitual criminal to become President and to assure that anti-American communist criminal will be able to remake the Constitution in her own vile form by appointing as many as five Supreme Court justices, who will hold their positions for the next generation. Nothing could be worse.

The word conservative has become meaningless. It is just a pejorative..just like liberal is.

Terms like small government, capitalism, corporatism, socialism still have some meaning.

In the US there is no majority concensus. The winner in a Presidential race and in Senate,Gov and statewide races must build a broad coalition.

A broad coalition is what Trump has built. He is supported by both pro-life and pro-abortion types. He is supported by both low tax and high tax types. He is supported by both pro and anti Obamacare types.

The theme of most Trump supporters is anger at the establishment over their arrogance and exclusion of ordinary people. That anger has zero to do with issues and ideology.

Trump will likely disappoint conservatives when he is elected. However, he will not be as disappointing as another four years of Obama policies. Paul Ryan says, “What a lot of Republicans want to see is that we have a standard bearer who bears our standards.” He is right for a change. That is why I and many others have sent contributions to Paul Nehlen. Ryan is like Rubio advisor Max Boot who stated, “I would sooner vote for Josef Stalin than I would vote for Donald Trump.”
Waryone wrote, ”Romney stayed home. He refused to confront Obama. That is why he lost.” Joe Biden said, “Half the time, in this last debate, I didn’t know whether or not Gov. Romney was there to debate Barack Obama or endorse Barack Obama.” Trump will not be kind to Hillary. If she has any sense she will refuse to debate him. She will have a mental breakdown during a debate.

Conservatives had their party hijacked from them in the 2016 primaries

Not true at all. Conservatives as conservatives have had no influence and no ownership in the Republican Party since the Bush I years.Conservatives elected to office routinely defect to the Establishment Left as soon as they take their seats and are no longer identifiable as conservatives. They are effectively leftist Democrats twenty minutes after they reach Washington.

disappoint conservatives? That depends on the definition of conservative.

Most of us believe he cannot and will not build the wall.

Most of us believe he will sign any repeal/changes to Obamacare that pass the House/Senate.

Some of us believe he will scare foreign countries into being less aggressive.

But the truth is none of us have a clue what he will really do. I suspect Trump himself has no clue what he will really do.

What “conservative movement”, someone tell me where it is. I certainly haven’t seen it although we assumed we had elected one. BS, they are only concerned with their money train. There is NO conservative movement in Washinton. There is only a good ole boys club that has cornered the money train and they want to keep.

Pro-life Catholics are a minority in the Church—a very vocal, active minority— but still a minority. No one who votes Democrat can claim to be pro-life. The Church has been preaching socialism and social justice since before there were such terms.

American churches have sold their souls to gorge themselves at the government trough. Abandoning their responsibility for the welfare of their members, the churches now scrabble to grasp at the crumbs that the government portions out in order to enslave them.

People may vote their pocketbooks, but the bill is paid in the tears of their children. Caesar’s ghost glares enviously out of his grave at the leviathan that feasts on the blood of generations.

“There is a way that seems right to a man,but its end is the way to death.”

I understand your logic, I really do, but all of the other genuine Conservatives were wiped out that year, and Romney was the only one left standing. This time, it is the same exact thing, but Donald Trump is the one left standing, and is not an establishment guy.

I think a Romney presidency would have been far different from another Obama term. For one thing, I don’t think Romney would have bypassed congress and legislated by executive order and action. You would hear an outcry from the media about it (despite their looking the other way when Obama does it). But this and more are in the past.

The fact of the matter is that now Barack Obama holds the ace card in the way people think and how politics is played. The narrative now works in his favor, and it most certainly appears as though Conservatives are finding it virtually impossible to reclaim it.

In a way if Trump is elected then it is good that both Romney and McCain lost. Sometimes from the ashes.....

“It is the liberal wing of the GOP that is behind the anti-Trump antics.”

Exactly right. They are just pretending to be conservatives, trying to set conservatives against Trump. But just look at the actual evidence.

GOPe is in bed with the Democrats for a Hillary presidency.

See:
