The acting governor of Rio de Janeiro state has declared a state of financial disaster so he has more leeway to manage the state's scarce resources less than two months Brazil hosts the Olympic Games.

Francisco Dornelles announced the decision on Friday. It will allow Rio's state government to change its budgetary priorities without disrespecting Brazil's fiscal laws.

The move will let Dornelles adopt exceptional measures to pay costs related to the Games as the state grapples with the country's economic recession.

The 2016 Summer Olympic Games will be held in Rio de Janeiro on Aug. 5-21.

This was predicted four years ago. No surprises. They probably will go begging to US, China, and EU to get some cash to finance this.

In 2016, Rio de Janeiro will become South America’s first Olympic host city, while the African continent is yet to host the Olympic Games. Other major geographic regions which have not hosted the Olympics include the Middle East, the Indian subcontinent, the Caribbean, and Southeast Asia.

Just under 50 days before the Olympics, Rio de Janeiro’s state governor has issued an executive order declaring a state of emergency that authorizes additional funding to fulfill obligations during the games.

A severe economic crisis has prevented the state from “honoring its commitments to the organization of the Olympic and Paralympic Games,” reads the order, released in the official government gazette Friday.

Brazil is a land of great potential, and always will be.

Brazil is a land of great unrealized potential, and always will be.

Like other South American countries Brazil suffers from a conflict between corrupt old moneyed families, corrupt crony capitalists and corrupt Marxist.

Until they can bring some semblance of honest capitalism to the political system they don’t have a prayer of realizing their potential.

My biggest fear is that North America is beginning to look a lot like South America.

But Zika wasn't. The world can't pull out now, because the planning is irreversible.

It's a potential nightmare that sounds more like Science Fiction than reality.

Since Brazil is in the Southern Hemisphere how is it the summer games they are hosting when it’s their winter? Not that it’s cold there.

I hope I’m wrong, but I think there’s going to be trouble in Brazil.

Want to bet that the press will cover that trouble like they cover the Clintons?

You could ask the same of the 1956 games in Melbourne and the 2000 games in Sydney.

The press would cover a local infestation of crickets before it would cover the Clintons.

Rio may be the death of the Olympic.

I have seen suggestions that rather then move the venue every four years a single site be created for the Olympic. It could be used as a training facility and tourist attraction when not needed for the Olympic.

Perhaps a dedicated site in Greece.

It will allow Rio’s state government to change its budgetary priorities without disrespecting Brazil’s fiscal laws.

Rio is a cesspool. Crime out of control, murder rate higher than Chicago. Abductions out of control.
Throw in a viral disease and now you have a reason to NOT go to this years Olympics.

Ditch the Olympics entirely. And the World Cup. Have an annual world championship in each sport tailored to the dynamics of each sport.

The Olympics’ devolution has coincided with the number of nations participating therein.
