Experts say yes, and that Dallas is just the beginning
A cop-killing suspect died Friday when Dallas police detonated a bomb robot at his parking garage hideout, using a possibly unprecedented policing tactic after 5 officers were shot dead.
But are American police actually allowed to blow up a suspect?
Legal experts says under certain circumstances, the answer probably is yes, though special considerations differentiate killings using robotics and explosives from more common defensive shootings.
The precise details of the robot-bombing are unclear, and experts say facts are essential to the legal analysis, even if existing principles governing use of lethal force apply.

Wrapped in bacon.
It was reported last night that he was shooting at them and threatened to kill more cops. Are people really questioning whether cops have the right to defend themselves from being murdered? Or are they just for some inexplicable reason all up in a tizzy over *how* dangerous shooters who pose an immediate threat die, even though they end up just as dead?
Domo Arigato Mr. Roboto.
Suspect?
If they are caught in the act and continue the offense, then they are guilty by act of continued action.
After that the cops are simply abating a dangerous nuisance.
Bombs are harder to dodge. If the perp had seen a robot with a gun, he would have moved around to make it more difficult for the robot to aim, while shooting at the robot.
Although I am frequently critical of the way police handle certain situations, I fully support their decision, here.
Once you initiate shooting at the police, anything they use short of tactical nukes is fair game.
What if robot came around the corner and said “I see you, drop the gun or I will blow up right now.”
Big whoop.
I didn’t know they had remote bombs.
I wonder how big of bombs they have.
I wonder what else they have.
An explosives blast has a small radius. A stray gunshot could travel a mile or more.
It is not the first time the police used a bomb to end a stand off:

This time it was more successful
It should be scrutinized as carefully as any other use of force.
EXCELLENT point.
Geez, well didn’t Obozo bomb 136 innocent Muslim civilians last year with drones.
“Really so long is the person is an active threat I dont have a problem with it.”
Exactly. If he is actively shooting at you and deadly force is authorize and warranted then who cares what kind of deadly force it was? As long as the collateral damage was not high.
It’ll be a short hop to justifying Predator + Hellfire strikes inside the US. This is terrible.
Totally lawless government plus military police weapons and tactics — the end of the Republic is nigh.
Drop the gun.
What do you do if you are eating supper and a robot comes up to your house and says “Turn over all your guns or I will blow you up right now.”?
Yes they are. So long as he robots are not white.
I turn in all my guns and make like Paul Revere.
There would be a response if the gov ever started that s#!t.
