What Mike Pence Would Bring to a Trump-Pence Ticket

Indiana Gov. Mike Pence would bring constitutional fidelity, conservative credentials, traditional faith, foreign policy, Washington know-how, and a calm, steady, Midwestern demeanor to a national ticket with Donald Trump, boosting the New York businessman with several types of voters that may prove to be the key to building an electoral coalition that could propel Trump into the White House.

...

Pence began as an outsider who served 12 years in Congress and rose to leadership.

Pence was an Indiana talk show host who took on the party establishment to get into Congress. Once there, he was regularly a thorn in the establishment’s side, routinely opposing the go-along-to-get-along establishment playbook. But he did so as a “happy warrior” who kept disagreement focused on policies, while being friendly and personable with his opponents.

Over time, Pence became very popular among conservatives, and effective at communicating a conservative message through the national media. He was elected the chairman of the Republic Study Committee (RSC), the organization for stalwart conservatives in the U.S. House so that they could coordinate their efforts to maximize conservative outcomes. (Over time it became “cool” to join the RSC, and with the influx of moderates it became both larger and less conservative. That led to the creation of the House Freedom Caucus in 2015, filling the same role originally performed by the RSC.)

Pence repeatedly opposed George W. Bush’s proposals to expand government. When Republicans lost the U.S. House in 2006, Pence took the ultimate anti-establishment step of running against John Boehner to be the leader of House Republicans. He lost that bid, but garners almost 30 voters against the future Speaker, making a name for himself as someone willing to oppose anyone who Pence believed would not lead as a conservative.

“It is difficult to imagine anyone thinking, “I wasn’t going to vote for that Trump guy, but I really like Mike Pence, so I’ll vote for Trump now.” Insert any other name for “Mike Pence” and the effect does not change. This election is all about Trump: people who want him will vote for him, people who don’t will vote against him.”

Indeed. I was disappointed with Pence as the pick, but I understand it. The VP is a non-entity and always has been in the modern history. Looks like that’s not going to change with Trump.

Pence is a “safe” pick because he’s essentially a non-entity, and I suspect a non-entity is who Trump wants because a firebrand like Newt or Christie would draw substantial media attention away from Trump and Trump’s message, and Trump and his message IS Trump’s brand, nothing more and nothing less. With Pence, there’s not a lot the media can say that matters other than that he’s a “safe” pick and a non-entity.

I agree, not because he is a bad choice, but because he doesn’t add anything to the ticket. I’ll still vote for Trump, but I’m less optimistic now than I was earlier.

The Democrats know what he will bring, and they are going after him. What they are saying about Pence is like what they have been saying about Trump for a year. The following is from Fox News:

Almost immediately after Trump named Pence, Hillary Clinton’s campaign blasted out an email Friday calling him “the most extreme VP pick in a generation.”

Clinton’s campaign outlined its talking points against the governor, pointing specifically to his record on LGBT and abortion rights, as well as his free-market economic policies.

“By picking Mike Pence as his running mate, Donald Trump has doubled down on some of his most disturbing beliefs by choosing an incredibly divisive and unpopular running mate known for supporting discriminatory politics and failed economic policies that favor millionaires and corporations over working families,” John Podesta, chairman of Hillary for America, said in a statement.

Christie can do more as AG than the largely ceremonial VP.

Newt can also do more as chief of staff & adviser than VP.

Trump is more than enough fighter. He does not need help in that direction. From my POV Governor Pence brings a more reliable conservative to the ticket, versus Newt & Chris.

Pence will become a very visible NET NEGATIVE for the Trump campaign .... I am a Trump supporter but this pick is AWFUL ... Pence is Pro Amnesty

The idiocy of the Pence Amnesty Ploy... Mike Pence proposed an Amnesty Sell Out that would have required the illegal aliens to just Step out of the U.S. and then immediately Step back into the U.S. Out new VP ... What a fricken disappointment ...

http://www.vdare.com/articles/hey-mike-pence-amnesty-is-the-absence-of-punishment-not-the-presence-of-reward

Our attention must now turn to the Pence Ploy—the alleged “compromise” miraculously proposed at the last minute by Congressman Mike Pence and widely whooped-up as a way of outflanking immigration patriots in the House.

http://www.vdare.com/articles/congressman-mike-pence-and-the-amnesty-lobby

Two days before the United States Senate passed S.2611, Congressman Mike Pence (R-IN) delivered a speech on immigration policy at the Heritage Foundation. Pence offered what he called a “middle ground” proposal, a “no amnesty immigration reform” in which “securing our border is the first step.” [Renewing the American Dream: The Real Rational Middle Ground on Immigration Reform, May 23, 2006]

The timing of Pence`s speech and his position as chairman of the House Republican Study Committee combined to get his proposal the maximum media attention. So, what is the “middle ground” Pence wants to occupy?

Pence is / would be a idiotic disappointment ... Pence is a budding Republican Establishment minion... Pence is PRO AMNESTY... Pence is a nobody ... Pence is a flip flopper has been who never was...

The VP is a non-entity and always has been in the modern history.

Nine Vice Presidents ascended to the presidency due to the death of the president, either by assassination or illness.

Then there was Ford.

Seems to me that a VP's chances of becoming president are statistically significant.

Pence is a buffer, that is all. Similar to G. H. Bush in 1980.

Tully; is this YOU?

Then Pence would shift a bunch of Hispanics away from her thighness.

Where is the downside?

Still he caved on religious freedom and will do so again.

Having a pack of wolves (Tully, The Indianapolis Star; all the big Hoosier corporations, the homo community) gnawing on your tail will tend to put a person in the defensive mode.

The old adage is true; but needs updated:

Never argue with a man who buys ink by the barrel; Or airtime by the hour.

What would you like to add?

Military experience, or a female running mate that will take the WOW BS away from the Democrats.

I know someone will reply that we should have the most qualified candidate, but I don't see where Pence is any more qualified than some of the female possibilities.
