There was a BBC report that according to witnesses the shooter was complaining about Turkish immigrants to Germany which is a bit strange. Maybe he was of Iranian Kurdish origin.

What mosque was he going to?

There are lots of extremist Sunni mosques in Germany (and throughout the West), but Shia mosques are harder to find. Several Western jihadis came from Christian, or Jewish families.

The family moved to the area two years ago - plenty of time for a teenager to fall in with a bad crowd. and be radicalized.

Second generation immigrants seem to be a better source of recruitment for the jihadis. They tend to be more the right age - awkward teens, and twenty-somethings searching for meaning.
