New ATF Head Wants Computerized Database of All Gun Purchases

Deputy Director Thomas Brandon (shown on right), head of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) appeared on CBS’s Sunday Morning television show, complaining that his agency is “a small agency with a big job” and that he really needs more agents and more money to do that job.

What he would really like, however, is a computerized database of all gun purchases made by every buyer and seller in the country:

There’s a lot of things that don’t make sense.… Would [having such a database at the ATF] be efficient and effective? Absolutely. Would the taxpayers benefit with [improved] public safety? Absolutely. Are we allowed to do it? No.

Brandon took over the agency in April 2015 after Todd Jones bailed out following the agency’s failed attempt to ban ammunition for the popular AR-15 rifle. Jones had taken over the agency after Kenneth Melson bailed out in 2011 following the implosion of the ATF’s Fast and Furious gun-walking scandal.

Besides reporting on this gungrabbing new ATF deputy director, this author offers excellent insight into the probable results of a successful Fast and Furious program and if the M855 5.56 green tip ammunition ban had been successful.

These stalinist scumbags will NEVER stop trying to eliminate our 2nd Amendment.

Congress has time and again rejected gun registration. Even most liberal politicians claim to oppose it.

How can some bureaucrat just make a new law? I know, I know.

No. I want all gun purchase records maintained only at the point of sale and destroyed after 90 days. To the extent that we have background checks, those should not include identifying information on the weapon, just on the potential buyer. If you’re okay to buy a rifle, then you’re okay to buy a rifle, without specifying that it is a 30-06 made by Remington, with serial number whatever.

I hope Congress will pass a law mandating destruction of those records and that Trump will sign it. The whole point is that FedGov should have no idea where to start in disarming Americans, to make it less likely that we will follow that path to civil war.

"Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms" needs to be a franchise convenience store, NOT a government agency.

Come January 2017, I predict a new 'mission statement' for BATF, which will be to get guns OUT of the hands of Muslim subversives.

He needs no more people or money if he does the job he is supposed to, Maybe not what he wants to, like the data base, which is illegal under current law. There is just no adequate negative word to describe Democrats, from Obama right on down to the lowest member of BLM - unethical, liars, pitiful, scum, dishonest, corrupt, Constitution haters, you name it, they all fit.

The same arguments for and against were made in the 1920s in the chaos of Germany’s Weimar Republic, which opted for gun registration. Law-abiding persons complied with the law, but the Communists and Nazis committing acts of political violence did not. In 1931, Weimar authorities discovered plans for a Nazi takeover in which Jews would be denied food and persons refusing to surrender their guns within 24 hours would be executed. They were written by Werner Best, a future Gestapo official. In reaction to such threats, the government authorized the registration of all firearms and the confiscation thereof, if required for “public safety.” The interior minister warned that the records must not fall into the hands of any extremist group. In 1933, the ultimate extremist group, led by Adolf Hitler, seized power and used the records to identify, disarm, and attack political opponents and Jews. Constitutional rights were suspended, and mass searches for and seizures of guns and dissident publications ensued. Police revoked gun licenses of Social Democrats and others who were not “politically reliable.” During the five years of repression that followed, society was “cleansed” by the National Socialist regime. Undesirables were placed in camps where labor made them “free,” and normal rights of citizenship were taken from Jews. The Gestapo banned independent gun clubs and arrested their leaders. Gestapo counsel Werner Best issued a directive to the police forbidding issuance of firearm permits to Jews. In 1938, Hitler signed a new Gun Control Act. Now that many “enemies of the state” had been removed from society, some restrictions could be slightly liberalized, especially for Nazi Party members. But Jews were prohibited from working in the firearms industry, and .22 caliber hollow-point ammunition was banned.

That’s an illegal registration scheme and the BATF already is in violation of the law by not having destroyed all the 4473s they’ve collected from businesses changing systems, closing or going under.
