Donald Trump Hands Kellyanne Conway, Stephen Bannon New Roles in Campaign

NEW YORK — Donald Trump is shaking up his campaign's leadership amid flagging poll numbers, NBC News has learned.

Kellyanne Conway — already a senior adviser to the campaign — told NBC News she has been promoted to the role of campaign manager. She confirmed that Paul Manafort will stay on as campaign chair but said Stephen Bannon, the co-founder of conservative Breitbart News, will come on board as campaign CEO.

The moves were first reported by The Wall Street Journal and mark yet another round of internal shakeups for a campaign that seems to be struggling to find consistent footing.

I want to win," Trump told the newspaper. "That's why I'm bringing on fantastic people who know how to win and love to win."

The Trump campaign parted ways with controversial campaign manager Corey Lewandowski after the primaries ended, citing a new phase of the campaign.

Manafort had been unofficially filling the role of campaign manager after Lewandowski's departure, but himself has been the subject of controversy amid questions over his ties to ousted Ukrainian Prime Minister Victor Yanukovich.

Trump has been trailing in polls to rival Hillary Clinton, with some Republicans publicly pressuring the Republican National Committee to abandon Trump's bid and instead focus on down ballot races.

The latest NBC News / SurveyMonkey Weekly Election Tracking Poll showed Clinton leading Trump by 9 points, 50 percent to 41 percent.

I think the introduction of these personnel, along with the ISIS speech and the visit to Wisconsin to address the civil unrest, are all moves towards appearing more presidential. Kellyanne is a fantastic strategist. This is a good move no mater where he stands.

Stephen Bannon is fantastic! I’ve been listening to his show all through the primaries. He seems to be briliant and was a nke ship commander at one time. He will give Trump great advice. I believe he has been the genius behind Breitbart media’s meteoric rise. I like Kellyann, but Bannon is going to be in charge IMO.

She’s great. Laura Ingram should be on board too.

CNN's Chris Cuomo is claiming that Bannon will use falsehood "scorched earth" approach, and that a return to "native Trump" will turn off voters who want an honest and presidential leader.

"Trump is digging in on his combative style."

LOL…who is CNN backing, Cuomo, you putz? Hillary Clinton, the least honest person in America. So please, don’t lecture us about wanting “honesty” in the White House, while the Democrats are trying to reinstall the Clinton Crime Syndicate at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

I’ll tell you why the shake up (of course I don’t really know, it’s just imho)

Under Manafort’s prompting (pun in tended) Trump has been using the teleprompter more. Trump is conflicted between this professional political advice and his own gut.

He gave it a try. It isn’t working. The teleprompter takes the Trump persona out of the equation and it’s his best asset.

Granted, “off the cuff” has it’s problems, but Trump speaking directly to each individual listening is his personal appeal. You feel like he is talking directly to YOU. I think in his own mind, he is doing just that. It’s not fake, he means it. It’s just Trump.

With written structured notes/outline, including complete text of important points, would go a long way to fix the “off the cuff” problems. The rest, well, is just Trump being Trump. You’ll just have to deal with it.

I hope his new team structure thinks this way also.

While I think Trump will win in a landslide, to go all out, including “running up the score”, is the best strategy for victory. CRUSH ‘EM!

[Will that be an accurate briefing...]

It will be a very short one, they’ll just hand him a subscription of the the New York Times and tell him that’s where WE get all our ‘national intelligence’.

Kelly Ann is one of the most articulate people in the campaign. She does not let people interrupt which is their best tactic and really hammers her points. Good choice.

Pray America wakes

Begala says "Trump started in the gutter, and now he is going to go into the sewer."

Trump is doubling down on what makes him the worst candidate in history.

It is pretty funny to watch. Trump has been remarkably honest, and the speculation that he is going to start lying with Bannon's help is risible.

Begala has been his usual bombastic BS artist self too.

The polls will inevitably flip to Trump's favor. CNN will double down on its dishonest reporting.

addendum to my post....

Obama is supposedly this great speaker (HURL!) sorry, wiping my mouth, yet he just reads exactly what someone else writes and puts in a teleprompter, But, Obama is a good teleprompter reader. In other words, he’s a great faker.

Trump is a great “natural” speaker. It’s a gift. Why hide it under a bushel?

Chuck the teleprompter! Trump doesn’t need no f-ing teleprompter!

I don't think Manafort is the only one who is urging Trump to avoid the off-the-cuff digs. And I think he is well aware of the press taking advantage of remarks selected in a cherry-picked fashion to occupy news cycles.

I wonder if Manafort or others are trying to get Trump to "fake something" about his persona, and I agree with you, any move in that direction is harmful to Trump's campaign. "Genuine" sells.

With the reorganizations coming at a fairly rapid pace, it's pretty clear that Trump is in charge. That's a good thing. He has good instincts, and his heart is in the right place.

Lewandowski has been doing a good job this morning - pointing out that he and all the others (Manfart included) have the same goal. While they may differ on the most reliable path to get there, none of them is trying to undermine the effort or impose their own path.

Having said that, Bannon while smart as a speaker is an awful talk show HOST. If I hear his overused words hobbit, brother, wingman ,

I don't have TV or cable....so what did he say about "wingman"...and in what context....?

Thanks in advance

I think he can find a balance. Like last night, perfect use of the teleprompter....then Fairfield, he let it rip.

[The teleprompter takes the Trump persona out of the equation...]

I couldn’t agree more, it comes to a point that I can’t WATCH him so I just LISTEN to his speech.

Reading his prepared written bullet points he has on the podium is much more effective and he can look the camera and drive them home with conviction.

One would hope that any briefing would be the same for candidates and President. If the President even bothers to receive such a briefing.

They are not the same. The president gets the "crown jewels" of the intelligence community. The candidates get selected information, as well as answers to questions they ask. The Q&A is shared with the opposition candidate. CNN reported that Carter submitted a list of some 24 questions or issues he wanted to be briefed on. I think Trump will be an active participant too.
