Commercial flights are too ‘burdensome’ for Clinton

Instead of flying between New York and Washington, DC, like a common traveler, Hillary Clinton wanted the Air Force to fly her — because she didn’t feel well enough to fly commercial, newly released emails show. An exchange from May 4, 2009, between Clinton and her closest aide, Huma Abedin, show the former secretary of state trying to figure out how to avoid the “burdensome” shuttle. The shuttle refers to hourly commercial plane service between New York and Washington, DC. “Do you think we could get a plane for Westchester flight back tonight?” Clinton wrote in an email released this week as part of an ongoing Judicial Watch Freedom of Information Act lawsuit against the State Department. “It’s going to rain all day and I still don’t feel great so the idea of playing a guessing game w the shuttle is really burdensome to me. What do you think? Could be anytime that works for the Air Force,” she added.

I doubt the AF flies into Westchester very often. VIPS flying on AF planes got way out of hand in the 80s. It started off when cabinet members wanted to fly space-a but rapidly escalated. Pretty soon Congressmen wanted flights from Washington to their home every weekend. After that we started getting calls asking about their family members and staff taking junkets to Hawaii. The AF isn’t staffed for this and it detracted from readiness to dedicate aircraft to a mission that we were never funded to support.

The result of the abuse was that Congress eventually cracked down on the abuse and came up with strict guidelines on when AF planes can be used. I don’t believe any of them included making a special trip to fly Hillary home for the weekend because she doesn’t want to spring for a charter or take a commercial flight.

If you travel with an entourage, then commercial travel is extremely clumsy. This is why entertainers, politicians, big-name evangelists, businessmen, eventually wind up chartering or buying their own aircraft. Especially if you are jumping from one venue to another and back again. Commercial travel is a pain on a good day, but if you are in constant motion with a staff accompanying you it can become impossible.

That said, there are myriad reasons why Hillary should be inside a prison cell and no where near the levers of power. Ever.

” ... if she can hitch a ride on a government plane that going where she wants to go anyway, what’s the problem?”

Hillary is a private citizen, like I am. I doubt that I could call the nearest Air Force base and be given a seat, even on a space-available basis, on the next flight to Westchester or wherever.

I’m sure the arrangements for official U.S, business are different than fir personal travel. The trip in question may have even been for Clinton Foundation business, since their offices are in NYC.

B.S. issue. I’m no Hillary fan (look at post history), but I would EXPECT our top cabinet officials to fly private aircraft if, for no other reason, to not mess up the traveling public with all of the extra security requirements that disrupt normal flight operations. I got bumped from a flight (shuttle) out of Logan one time because Ted Kennedy and his entourage needed the seats - flying coach no-less.

Did Colin Powell or Condoleeza Rice fly commercial when they were Secretary of State?

Yes, when people want a medical assessment, the person to turn to is Jimmy “The Flop” Kimmel and his pickle jar test. Stupid, not funny.

Didn’t Hillary fly secret recon missions in Catalina PBYs back in WWII?

In the shop for maintenance. Excess flight hours had taken their toll.

“Hillary is a private citizen ...

I once worked for the government. I could walk into our parking lot and use a government car to go places related to business. I didn’t have to use my car.

Seems that recently being under normal air pressure is too burdensome for her.

“I once worked for the government. I could walk into our parking lot and use a government car to go places related to business. I didn’t have to use my car.”

I, too, had similar perks when I worked for the government. Last I heard, Hillary does not work for the government.
