U.S. Navy ship fires warning shots toward Iranian vessel: CNN

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. Navy ship fired three warning shots after an Iranian fast-attack craft approached and circled two U.S. Navy ships and a Kuwaiti vessel in the northern Gulf on Wednesday, CNN reported on Thursday.
It said the U.S. ship fired the shots into the water after the Iranian ship did not leave after a brief radio conversation, CNN said, citing U.S. officials.

It sounds like the USN ship was following fairly standard international ROE.
First verbal warnings.
Then some sort of display (lighting up weapons systems, firing flares, low passes by aircraft, etc...)
Then small arms/50 cal into the water ahead of the ship.
Then possibly larger guns (25mm or 5 inch, depending on ship class and exact ROE) firing into the water ahead of the ship.
Then you start pumping rounds into the ship.
These steps are somewhat flexible as if the CO sees the ship coming directly at his own and thinks he is under imminent attack (i.e. US Cole style suicide boat) then he is able to start dropping rounds into the bad guy.

The article I saw said the US ship failed to deter the Iranians so the US ship changed course.
It is scripted. When I planned exercises for US Readiness Command (REDCOM) we built a MEL or Master Event List. The US and Iranians have a Master Incident List. Only the White House (Jarret) knows when it will blow up to meet their needs.
Next it will be suicide boat, Revolutionary Guard style, and the Iranians will say it was unfortunate accident confounded by the unprofessional seamanship of the US Navy.

Disagree. You aren’t dealing with a one off incident. This is just the latest in an escalation from a nation that chants “Death to America”, is arming terrorists to attach American troops and American allies, interferes with the US Navy in an active war zone, captures and humiliated US sailors, is designing anti-ship missiles to direct at American forces, and is still developing nuclear weapons. The time for restraint is long over.
