What is the preferred plane for reconnaissance then?

A satellite.

The muzzie NASA is a mere shadow of its former self dedicated to Science and Technology. Meritrocracy too.

“NASA will never accomplish anything again.”

My point was that bureaucracies have ossified.

What is the preferred plane for reconnaissance then? Depends on the mission. I flew on the RC-135 that worked with the U2.

The chase car was there to catch the plane and install the wing struts, if I recall correctly.

The U-2 because it is much much cheaper to operate. Satellites perform most of the photo reconnaissance; and, the U-2 is used whenever an unscheduled visit is preferred or whenever satellite tracks are not optimal.

U-2 aka the “Dragon Lady”

Has really unusual landing gear. Flies high and goes far.

Kelly Johnson was the man. Known for incredible use of small resources and accomplished incredible feats.

There was nothing before or after quite like the Black Bird.

At altitude, stall speed is 7 kts slower than cruise.
