No need for a moderator. They are useless. Trump should demand next debate they go one on one. Give them 90 minutes to duke it out. They can have a host come out at the beginning to introduce them, but then exit the stage.

The microphone wire comes from the back, around the waist to the front, them up the front to a collar or lapel IN THE FRONT.
The IFB, (Interruptible FeedBack) Earpiece wire comes up the middle of the back under a jacket, around the collar from the middle of the back to the back of the ear, then up the back of the ear, over the top of the ear, into the ear.
The IFB allows the person on camera to hear the program audio (what is going out on the air), or have that program audio INTERRUPTED by the producer, director or coach to give them direction, advice, etc.
There is no doubt this was an IFB, prohibited by the rules.

CSPAN had that raw feed, as they were broadcasting for quite some time before the debate began. And yes, definitely just a few minutes before it began he called out to get his earpiece fixed. They eventually cut the sound, but you could clearly hear and see the early exchange.

I’m reading that the earpiece was for the commission’s debate producer (only) to speak to the moderator, but not the news producer as in primaries.

You can find stories online saying that earpieces were banned for moderators and stories saying they weren’t banned. So it’s not entirely clear if they were banned or not.
