OK, I know that the source is not held in high esteem by many (including myself) but I don't think that the clip from the raw pool feed of the pre-debate preparations lies.
It shows the 'Moderator', Lester Holt, testing his earpiece, and it not working, leading to the receiver / battery pack being replaced by studio techs.
THIS IS IN CONTRAVENTION OF THE WELL PUBLICIZED DEBATE RULES released last week. Lester Holt may have surpassed Candy Crowley for debate moderator malfeasance.
But this video makes it obvious that Holt was cheating, for Hillary. Supposedly Holt is a 'republican'... But if he is, he must be a #NeverTrumper... Or perhaps just cowed by his leftist bosses and/or the clinton machine.

Holt committed professional suicide last night.
He fell on his sword for the cause, and died in vain.
He needed an earpiece because he could never remember all the questions he’d agreed with hillary’s managers to ask.

No need for a moderator. They are useless. Trump should demand next debate they go one on one. Give them 90 minutes to duke it out. They can have a host come out at the beginning to introduce them, but then exit the stage.

I’ve been interviewed on TV a number of times.
The microphone wire comes from the back, around the waist to the front, them up the front to a collar or lapel IN THE FRONT.
The IFB, (Interruptible FeedBack) Earpiece wire comes up the middle of the back under a jacket, around the collar from the middle of the back to the back of the ear, then up the back of the ear, over the top of the ear, into the ear.
The IFB allows the person on camera to hear the program audio (what is going out on the air), or have that program audio INTERRUPTED by the producer, director or coach to give them direction, advice, etc.
There is no doubt this was an IFB, prohibited by the rules.
The Election Commission needs to stop using media persons to moderate. Take it to a university, as they did, and use one of their people to moderate.
You make a number of good points there.
At the end of the day, you know what you did. There’s no pride in what he did, and he’ll look back on it with embarrassment.

Let the nominees ask the question on stage and allow a moderator a time limit. The moderator should not ask additional questions period.
Some say questions were given to Hillary beforehand. Maybe the questions were given by the Clinton team to Lester beforehand and in his ear during the debate. In ball terms Trump is taking on the other team, the refs, the crowd, and the TV crew in their home stadium. The TV crew is in Trump’s huddle showing the play to the Clinton team and he is still taking it to them.
