You would be wrong. “no duty to protect.”. Supreme Court. The poster who said “chalk outlines and fill out reports” was INDEED correct.

It’s not just a matter of not showing up. They can be ordered to stand down. That has happened a number of times.

I don’t want to say much here or get into legal minutiae, but I’m a lawyer and I’ve discussed this at length with both a sheriff of a highly populated county and a mid-size city police chief. I understand the law. I also understand that every rule has an exception and laws have to be considered in light of a specific set of facts. All that said, generally speaking, in a riot situation they have no duty to step in and defend you.

You mean, spouse, girlfriend, ex-lover, etc.

Yes, I was just too lazy to go back and read the article again when writing a synapse. I can not recall if it was wife, ex, or gf. Sorry, didn't think it mattered. I don't hang with the homosexual left (or right) so I was not aware I was making a vocab sin.

Absolute BS that criminal judges turn these thugs back on the streets after they’re arrested.

Thugs like this are a danger and shouldn’t be released for at LEAST 2 weeks. If there was actually a penalty associated with this criminal behavior, they may think a little longer about doing it.

Personally, I would be okay if they wasted these human debris but, if not, at least keep these animals in a cage to give them more time to think about breaking laws.

In that case you have the option of “judged by twelve or carried by six”. Great news! You get to decide. Me, I decided long ago I trust twelve of my neighbors a lot more since then.

Oh, and for those who don’t remember Reginald Denny, he was pulled from his truck and three feral Yates repeatedly slammed concrete blocks AND A PORCELAIN TOILET into his head shattering his skull to pieces. That he survived was a miracle but he was a quadripartite brain devastated incapacitated disabled cripple.

" Hell, this is a good argument for full auto."

Hell, this is a good argument for M18 Claymores.

Between my equalizer and my 3/4 ton 4x4, I don’t think that it would have been pretty. I would have put it in 4 WD and started moving. Anyone block me and they would have been a target.

You always have the legal right to defend yourself. How you may legally go about it varies by jurisdiction, so I can’t help you there and it would be foolish of me to try. I carry a firearm everywhere I’m legally able, but I’ll go to extremes to avoid using it. The potential repercussions are dire.

And barring that, doing donuts in your car should clear some space around your car.

Again, I appreciate your insight and I understand your legal explanation. In your example, they could be told to stand down. In that case, one could argue that any responsibility has now been assumed by the higher authority ordering the stand down. Ultimately, they work for the public and the public can hold them accountable, via elections, or otherwise, and can fire irresponsible officials.

Some of my argument (and I am certainly not a lawyer) is probably semantic. Duty seems to have become a legal term, meaning if its your duty and you fail you can get sued, prosecuted, etc. Duty used to mean doing the right thing and we didn’t need laws to tell us what that was. And I guess that’s the second part of my argument (not with you, just my rant), that if police have no duty to protect, what are they but a tax collection tool. If firemen have no duty to put out fires, why have a fire dept. Etc, etc.

As I said earlier on, the world is on its head.

“I don’t hang with the homosexual left (or right) so I was not aware I was making a vocab sin.”

I don’t hang with homos either, but my business used to be located in a high density homo area, so I was aware of them co-opting that word, long ago.

Glad I could help.

I suppose we’re getting to the point that no one will leave home without a friend riding shotgun holding an AR-15 in his lap. If the driver were also armed with his own black rifle, imagine how much fire they could lay down, should they get stopped.

I recommend a CB radio in your car. I have one. Truckers will let you know what’s going on up ahead, so you have the option of taking an alternate route.
Mine cost $50 from a pawn shop, plus $15 for a magnetic Radio Shack antenna. New radios are just a few dollars more.

Of course, you should have firepower as backup and be prepared to use it if avoidance isn’t possible.
But, know that if you’re forced to defend yourself on the street, you’re likely to need a lawyer, since your attackers will quickly turn into “witnesses” who outnumber you. And they will lie, count on it.
You cannot shoot video and drive, so, a dash cam is highly recommended, too, in addition to a CB.

Be aware, in riot situations, the police have already been given orders to protect the rights of the “peaceful protestors.” The likelihood they’ll come running to protect you when you call is zilch. You’re on your own.

Avoidance when possible; lethal defense when necessary.

I hear you and understand where you are coming from. I’m a Christian and a Southern gentleman. I believe a man has a number of duties that aren’t legal obligations. But yes, I’ve been using the word “duty” in a strictly legal sense.

It was made in the 1970’s if I remember correctly and the poster is correct. The government is not obligated to protect you. In most cases law enforcement will arrive when called but if they don’t as I said you are on your own, plan accordingly.

I’m a Christian and a Southern gentleman.

We share both these traits. I have just been living away from the south for many years now. I plan to return on my retirement.

I just realized we also share sort of similar FR names. Care to make some noise at the range someday? :)

Yes, see my post 51 and Long Colts reply. Its the distinction between what duty means legally and what right and wrong really is. There is too much wrong in society today, but I am not going to fix that here...
