The Waffle House on Route 59 in Mandeville didn’t shut down for Katrina and was the only place in the New Orleans area where relief workers could get a hot meal during most of September 2005. When the power grid went down, Waffle House’s electric generators came on and they stayed open through out the disaster.

If Hurricane Katrina couldn’t shut down Waffle Houses and Hurricane Matthew can, it does indicate Hurricane Matthew could be a disaster of Biblical proportion.

Lol!! Had no idea, but makes sense that they’d be a bellwether! Love it!!

Waffle House saw us thru many trips made of necessity on holidays when all other places were closed. They warmly greeted hungry weary bathroom-desperate families. Now I mostly gaze at them with longing & fond memories.
