A thousand more people have been shot in Chicago this year compared with the same time last year after a weekend that saw eight people killed and at least 40 wounded, according to police and data compiled by the Tribune.
At least 3,475 people had been shot in the city as of shortly after midnight Monday compared with 2,441 people shot this time last year, an increase of 1,034, according to Tribune data. There have been at least 595 homicides this year compared with 409 this time last year, an increase of 186.
The gun violence over the weekend was at levels usually seen in the summer when shootings typically spike.
A single attack Friday night in East Garfield Park killed one man and left six others wounded, according to police. The people were standing together in the 3300 block of West Maypole Street when someone opened fire from a black vehicle, police said.
An attack of that scale has not occurred in Chicago since 2014, when seven people -- including several young teens -- were shot in Lawndale.
The Maypole shooting capped off an exceptionally deadly night on the West Side. Less than a half-hour before, two men were fatally shot in a South Austin drive-by, police said. About an hour before that, an 18-year-old man was killed in West Garfield Park
But shootings occurred in nearly every corner of Chicago over the weekend, from a fatal attack in West Rogers Park to a shooting in Morgan Park near the southern border.

You reap what you sow, Mayor Rahm Emanuel. Tie the hands of the police, and you get mayhem in the hoods. Thank goodness when I was young and lived down in the big City for a period of years (not that many), it was still relatively safe to walk the streets of better neighborhoods at night (at least when it was still light out, and even at night in heavily populated nightlife and tourist areas).
Now it can be dangerous everywhere in the City of Chicago. So sad. For the most part it is a beautiful and historic City, and it’s being ruined by years and years of Dem politics and the plantation mentality of keeping the poor Black folk (and now Hispanics too) isolated and living in shoot em up districts. Meanwhile, they pay off the poverty pimps to keep the natives and the pimps themselves more quiet. Not working anymore. The natives are rebelling, and killing each other as well as escaping the hoods to go out and kill Whitey and Cops when it suits them.
Glad I’m long retired now, as I worked for years at a major University (UIC) down very near to the heart of the City. The same University where last year the staged riots by the DNC against Trump’s eventually cancelled visit that James O’Keefe speaks of in his video released today, occurred.
That campus is now a hotbed of activism, with a huge Muzzie population of students, as well as all the aggrieved minorities that now attend UIC. My timing in getting out of there (both the City and the Campus) was impeccable, thank goodness. I’d hate to be near either Chicago or UIC now.
