DC Council approves name change if city becomes state
The Washington Examiner ^ | October 18, 2016 | Anna Giaritelli

The D.C. Council unanimously approved the name "State of Washington, D.C." in its push for statehood on Tuesday, rejecting the long-favored name of New Columbia.

However, instead of the D.C. standing for District of Columbia, it would refer to Douglass Commonwealth, in honor of Frederick Douglass

“State of Washington, D.C.” sounds stupid. Not that statehood has a snowball’s chance in Hell of happening anyway.

Maybe all Democrat hell-hole cities could become states!

That would really lock in the electoral votes.

Wow, this is going to be even more annoying to the people in the State of Washington.

No it won't, because there is no way D.C. statehood will ever occur. D.C. has been asking for this since at least the '70s. In 1978, Congress tried to amend the Constitution to give D.C. full representation in the Congress. Only 16 States ratified the proposed amendment (38 needed for adoption). In 1982, D.C. voters approved a far-left State Constitution. It was submitted to President Reagan and a Democratic Congress, where it was never voted on.

This is simply a pipe dream D.C. likes to toy with from time to time. It never goes anywhere.

“District of Columbia” was actually the name of the entire area, and Washington was just a part of it. Thus, that name should be it, or “Columbia”, or perhaps “State of Columbia” if you want to be persnickety about latching onto the old format.

Douglass? No thanks. Great man (truly for a black), but still, I want absolutely no quarter on black PCness taking over everything now, especially really important things. Sick of these sycophants screaming and fighting (literally) for their way and getting it. They deserve the boot, not boot-licking.

This is about warped symbolism anyhow. Douglass would most certainly be hijacked into a form that he himself wouldn’t recognize.

Maybe that is what Washington DC is trying to get going here. It could happen and we’d get Chicagostan and more.

Name should honor him and the longtime Representative from the state of Michigan who recently retired after 59 years.
They can call it Dingellbarry. Anther name would be Oprahoma.

“Donkey Crap” seems more appropriate than Douglass Commonwealth.

The Negro youth who are supposed to be inspired by the memory of Frederick Douglass, don’t go to school, and if in school, don’t pay attention. So they have no idea who Frederick Douglass is anyway.
