Germans have been urged not to scapegoat migrants, after an Afghan youth was arrested over the rape and murder of a German student.
A 17-year-old Afghan boy is under suspicion because a DNA test appears to link him to the spot in Freiburg where the woman was attacked in October.
Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel warned Germans not to exploit the crime "for incitement and conspiracy propaganda".
Last year's massive influx of migrants fuelled tensions over immigration.
The 19-year-old medical student disappeared in mid-October on her way home from a party in Freiburg, south-western Germany. Her body was found in the river Dreisam.
The anti-immigration and anti-Islam Alternative for Germany (AfD) has gained ground in local elections, campaigning against Chancellor Angela Merkel's liberal policy towards migrants.
Mrs Merkel's spokesman Steffen Seibert condemned the "heinous" crime in Freiburg, but added: "We must not forget that we're talking about the possible act of one Afghan refugee, not that of a whole group of people, who are Afghans or refugees like him."
In the past two years there has been an escalation of attacks on migrant hostels in Germany - in some cases they have been burnt down.
The suspect being questioned by police arrived in Germany as an unaccompanied minor last year.

Is it “conspiracy propaganda” when they actually do it, time after time after time?
Leave it to the BEEB and Merkle's Germany to be THIS stupid!
I agree. Don’t scapegoat um. Just get um out of there.
The German pols are bending over backward not to call a rapist a rapist and Muzzlimes Muzzlimes. What’s the terrorization and murder of their own native people doing for them? Are they being paid off by the Saudis or someone to turn a blind eye to these heinous crimes? I might be naive, but I simply cannot wrap my mind around any responsible government official making excuses for this over and over and over again. There has to be something else in play. The simplest explanation is that they are being paid off under the table to let the Muzzie boys have their savage way with frauleins.
How badly did we beat these people in WW2 that they’ve become so astonishingly pusillanimous?
Scapegoat? Really?
Well, this calls for organization to deal the whole thing a firm NO.
For goodness sakes. We know the cultural divide. Isn’t it even cruel to the Muslim migrants to migrate them into the West? It’s not as though some other secure area could be found in a place that is more Muslim by culture?
Scapegoating is what humans do. Always have; always will.
If it looks like a duck, quacks...
It sounds like a culture that’s easily hijacked. Stockholm syndrome prone.
For the sake of the Germans themselves, it probably would be smart for the USA to offer to help them. At this point, the migrants could be migrated to some other place, and it would even take a load off of Merkel. Germany can be as generous as it wishes to this settlement... far away from them.
Just because the Africans and Muslims are rampaging through the streets, raping women and children, burning their shelters, and stealing from shops doesn’t mean they are doing it.
Signar Gabriel is too stupid to be allowed to roam free, much less hold a government position. She needs to be sent to live in a refugee camp for a few weeks to receive a necessary education.
I agree. Don’t scapegoat them.. REPATRIATE them!!!!! ASAP!
We realized too late that Germany was a bulwark protecting Western Civilization. We demilitarized, divided, and punished them, destroyed their nationalism, and turned them into another Sweden. Instead of deservedly punishing Nazi criminals, we destroyed the strongest country in Europe, and now we can’t figure out why they act like sheep.
I sometimes wonder what would have happened if the USA of that time had told Germany it looks like they got a problem with an evil hypnotist, and we’d be glad to snap our fingers.
Ah, that wouldn’t have flown with FDR.
