THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK
COLE PORTER
DuBARRY WAS A LADYColes musicals were getting naughtier in the late Thirties. This musical starred Ethel Merman, Coles favorite female vocalist, and vaudeville legend Bert Lahr, who achieved immortality later that year in The Wizard of Oz. The censors in Boston had problems during tryouts, so by the time the show reached Broadway, the resulting publicity saw ticket lines going around the block. The show ran for almost two years.
The 1943 MGM film version threw out most of Coles music and was revamped as a vehicle for Lucille Ball, Red Skelton and Gene Kelly. Very little of the original remained.
JOHN BARROWMAN: DO I LOVE YOU?The song sounds a bit like Pergolesi, a composer of the Italian Baroque. The video is very, very gay, but once you get past that, the performance is outstanding along with the production.

Well hey there Feathers! Long time, no see.
Bummer about your keyboard. How on earth did you fry it?
At least you have something to work with now.
We’re doing ok. Had my hands full this week assimilating four new cats into the “herd”. Been an adventure. LOL!

DuBARRY WAS A LADY
ELLA FITZGERALD: DO I LOVE YOU?Ella slows it down for this 1956 recording and turns it into an exceptional ballad. The way she handles the end will make your screen go blurry.
