On the face of it, it looks a lot like Australia’s compulsory voting law. But we are not Australia, and that law is still controversial over there, although apparently not enough people are inconvenienced by it to demand a repeal.

So, should we point out that the people who refuse to register in order to avoid the fine are virtually certain to be constituents of hers, or just let her find out later?

Fail proof dem strategy to never lose another election: make voting mandatory in order to receive any sort of public assistance from the state.

We haven’t even had 65% eligible voter turnout since 1908. Congressional elections in off years get around 40% eligible voter turnout. Who knows if that is good or bad. The point is there’s many that just don’t care. What is worse is that supposedly the dumbest 10% of voters decide all elections, no matter who wins. The swing voters just vote on who manages to sway them that election, many times for non-rational reasons like debate performance or personal appearance.

Freegards

So it would be a lot cheaper to live in NY and not vote than to live in Texas and masturbate.

Mandatory voting—as they had in the Soviet Union and its satellites.

I bet she has zero interest in requiring voters to be educated on the issues and the candidates before they are forced to vote.

Sounds like she is disenfranchising those poor black folks who don’t want to vote and don’t have the 10 bucks to pay the fine.

How are they going to be able to identify those who didn't vote? By using Voter ID on those who do vote? Sounds good to me ... anything that requires them to ID voters is a step in the right direction ...

I'd like to see how the SJW explain THAT! "Well, we were against voter ID because the poor and old couldn't afford it. But, now, we're going to use voter ID so that we can punish those people who don't vote ... probably the poor and the old."

New York reminds me of those communist countries where Dear Leader is re-elected by 99% of the vote because he is the only name on the ballot and the party concludes it was all a fair election.

Just checked the news here at FR and in the space of some 30 seconds I see that someone has been fined by the govt for architectural concept work...a Kennedy thinks the govt should own our organs by default...and now this creature wants to punish people for not voting.
What has become of America?

OK...the reason they say that requiring a photo ID to vote is bad is it places an “undue burden” on the poor (even though it would eliminate vote-fraud.)

However, THIS is an idea that says to me “we don’t like the results we are getting even though we can ‘vote the graveyard’ NOW, we want to FORCE more poor people to vote.” How is fining the poor $10 for FAILING to show up and vote assumedly-Democrat NOT an “undue burden”?

Democrats are so freaked out over losing an election, I’m surprised they don’t suggest a firing squad if you don’t vote.

Of course Republicans could get an opt out...

Some other idiot liberal will cry this will disenfranchise “poor and minorities” because they can’t afford the fine. But another will “fix it by having a default vote for democrat for all those who don’t make it to the polls.

Sometimes, given poor enough choices, abstaining from voting may be the best political choice available.

And when the wards of the state don’t vote WE get to cover their fines. This way the Democrats win no matter what. If they vote, they vote Democrat. If they don’t vote we pay their fines and the democrats steal the money to buy more votes with.

If this law passes it will last until someone refuses to vote gets fined $10 and argues he does not vote as a political protest. The courts will have no trouble declaring this law unconstitutional.
