White House looks past conservatives on tax reform - to Democrats
Reuters ^ | March 26th, 2017 | By Lindsay Dunsmuir and Doina Chiacu

Fresh off a defeat on U.S. healthcare legislation, the White House warned rebellious conservative lawmakers that they should get behind President Donald Trump's agenda or he may bypass them on future legislative fights, including tax reform.

The threat by White House chief of staff Reince Priebus to build a broad coalition on tax reform that could include moderate Democrats came as the Republican head of the tax-writing committee in the House of Representatives said he hoped to move a tax bill through his panel this spring.

House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady said his committee had been working on tax reform in parallel with the failed healthcare reform push.

"We've never stopped working," Brady told Fox News' "Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo." "We will continue to make improvements."

Brady said the committee plans to move on the bill in the spring. He said he wanted the House blueprint to be the basis for Trump's tax reform plan rather than have competing versions from Treasury and the White House.

Both Trump and Priebus have scolded hardline conservatives who rejected legislation backed by the White House to overhaul Obamacare.

Speaking on "Fox News Sunday," Priebus held out the possibility of working with moderate Democrats as well as Republicans to pass other aspects of Trump's agenda, such as his proposed budget, the revamp of the tax code and a renewed effort at healthcare reform.

"If we can come up with a bill that accomplishes the goals of the president with Republicans alone, we'll take it and we'll move forward with it," Priebus said.

The FC has the easiest job in the world. Complain and have no solution of your own (with any chance of becoming law)

If conservatives have given up advocating for limited constitutional government, the Republic as we know it will be finished within a generation.

Where did all these far left voters come from? Answer: the government school system. How many conservatives with children have pulled their heads out of their back ends, and removed their children from the pagan academies aka socialist government schools? It all starts in the home. Some of us have been warning about this for years. Most Christians and conservatives have done very little about this, while at the same time complaining about all the social engineering.

The time to get off soapboxes and take control of our homes is NOW.

Trump is not the only one.

We have a sizable group on this forum who have now decided to trash the Freedom Caucus.

Ryan and the GOPe did exactly what I predicted last year.

If they couldn’t defeat Trump at the polls, their last ditch effort would likely be to circumvent his goals with fake “Conservative” legislation.

Here is was. It didn’t pass, but now folks have fallen for it even here, and this has split Conservatism right down the middle.

Half think Ryan and the GOPe areb now their best buds.

Holy Cow..., winning isn’t everything.

You must win by pushing something worthy of having as part of the mix.

This wasn’t worth having.

Ryan should have come out with repeal right off the bat.

The fact that he didn’t should tell folks all they need to know.

The GOPe wants a big government plan. So do the other Leftists.

Not just no, but hell no.

I wouldn’t back it under Obama and I won’t back it under Trump.

I support Trump, but I do so within limits.

This crossed the line.

Freedom Caucus voted to put Paul Ryan in charge, not Trump.

Now why would they do that knowing Ryan is a big fat RINO.

Our side always loses because we all want what we want and we want it now. There is no glue holding us together.

I didn’t like that bill either, but I don’t blame Trump. He has already done more than Bush did in 8 years.

We aren’t going to get this much power again and we need to trust Trump. He got us here based solely on pure political instinct in a lot of headwind.

We are NOT going to get full tilt to the right, ever, with the way our country is headed and it’s not Trump’s politics either.

For me all actions are viewed thru the prism of getting as much as you can incrementally and thinking long term.

Republicans in the House had a chance to align with him and get much of what they desire. They chose not to.,P>This is a false meme. Ryan pulled the vote so all wouldn't see how many "moderates" aka establishment were no votes. Together with HFC, they stopped bill but if others had supported it, I believe HFC had votes to put him over.

Exactly.

Someone is giving him really bad advice.

If he had listened to the conservatives, he would already have solved the health care problem. He would have had all of them on board and that was/is all he needed.

So turn more of them away and see how successful that is.

The idea that you should accept what you don’t want because otherwise you’ll get what you don’t want is a logical fallacy.

You’ll have “deficit hawks” opposing him on taxes and infrastructure and “compassionate Conservatives” opposing him on immigration. He’ll get nothing done if he sticks to Republicans alone

The COC supports the “political center”. If they and the Kochs are claiming to support the FC, it is just a tactical move to get conservatives to turn their backs on principle.

I support Trump, but I support the Republic first.

He is very conservative on national security matters, inclusive of illegals, jihadi migration, defense etc.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That is even in doubt. DACA continues operating as if it were law and not something Obama dreamed up.
“This is apparently the liberal president we were warned against.”
Conservatism will not save us. Only a wall and a curb on immigration will. Demographics is destiny. After a few more years and it won’t matter if the president is 99% pure conservative. But, of course, he would never get elected, ever.
I understand where you’re coming from.
I agree that this is psych out material.
They want to revive this nonsense.
I expect this model to be played out over and over, and it’s going to be a long four years if FReepers are going to jump at every Leftist substitute for what Trump actually wanted to do, every time they do it.
I agree with your post (#43).
At this point in time, Trump appears to be doing his best to divide his base. He’s embracing the guys that tried to screw him during the election.
I’m tired of having to deny my common sense in defending SOME of the things he’s doing, and being told, “This is the Art of the Deal.” His deal is helping to divide his base!
I don’t see how Trump can EVER fully ally with the Freedom Caucus when he knows it is riddled with former never Trumpers and Cruzlims.
I believe so, and I eMailed him at the White House and said exactly that.
There is much I want to get out of this guy, while the getting is good, so I am not going to trash him.
When he’s wrong, I’ll say so. I won’t get a kick out of doing it, but right is right and wrong is wrong.
Ryan and the GOPe ARE NOT AND NEVER WILL BE on the side of Conservatism folks.
NEVER!
The question is if you get 60% of what you want and 40% of what you hate do you take that over 100% over what you hate? What about 50/50? FC can always say they won because hey can continue to blame Ocare for all the problems and they don't "own" it. That's not leadership and one thing everyone should see is that where things are now will not improve anything. Trump may have to work with Dems to fix Obamacare. How that is better than the bill that was on the table..I don't know. Other than well, we don't own it by again... That's not leadership. Leaders WANT to take ownership
