It was the largest amphibious invasion in history, commanded by General Dwight D. Eisenhower. More than 13,000 aircraft and 5,000 ships supported the operation.

Allied casualties on D-Day have been estimated at 10,000 killed, wounded, and missing in action: 6,603 Americans, 2,700 British, and 946 Canadians.

Knew a guy named Dan Furlong that jumped on D-day and Market-Garden. Was shot up badly in Holland, but survived and live to 92-3. I found he was mentioned in a Stephan Ambrose book on D-Day and I showed it to his son. It was about being told not to load his gun on the jump, being surrounded, and knifing a German soldier. The son never heard the story mentioned in the book. Dan was a good man. Most of these guys are gone now.

Earl Solomon was a good friend of my Dad's back in the 70's and 80's. Earl was an infantryman who came ashore in France after the initial invasion by a few days.

Earl was lucky enough to shoot a German soldier in the head while the German was taking a piss on a tree. Earl later went on to kill many more Germans before he finally made it to Berlin. He was matter of fact about it and I seriously doubt he ever lost a minutes sleep over it his entire life. Very nice guy.

In the mid-1990’s I sat near a man who was on a ship waiting to invade Japan. He cried when someone questioned the bombing of Hiroshima. They were saying he should have died.
