The shooting of Steve Scalise is an argument for concealed-carry reciprocity
New York Daily News ^ | June 15, 2017 | John R Lott Jr

Posted on 06/15/2017 7:32:30 AM PDT by richardb72

Although he was seriously wounded, it is a lucky thing that Rep. Steve Scalise made it to baseball practice on Wednesday morning. Due to his position as majority whip, armed Capitol Hill Police accompanied Scalise. This security detail saved the lives of his House colleagues and two senators.

As Rep. Mike Bishop (R-Mich.), told WWJ radio in Detroit, “The only reason — the only reason — why any of us walked out of this thing: By the grace of God, one of the folks here had a weapon to fire back and give us a moment to find cover. Because we were inside the backstop and if we didn’t have that cover by a brave person who stood up and took a shot themselves, we would not have gotten out of there and every one of us would have been hit. Every single one of us.”

Many Republican representatives have concealed handgun permits from their home states, but carrying in the District of Columbia is illegal for all but a select few D.C. residents. The attack occurred in relatively gun-friendly Virginia, though that is irrelevant to a representative going directly between baseball practice and Capitol Hill.

Representative Barry Loudermilk (R-Ga.) thinks that he has a solution: allow congressmen and women to carry in D.C. if they have a permit to do so in their home state. Of course, congressmen still aren’t likely to be carrying guns while out in the field, practicing baseball.

And what about their staffs? Why limit concealed carry only to congressmen and women?

Other Republican lawmakers are proposing nationwide reciprocity bills for all permit holders. Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) is introducing such legislation this week. Reciprocity would make life simpler for permit holders who travel. . . .

The congressmen could have protected themselves if they had had weapons. They could carry in VA but not in DC where they came from. Sitting ducks. Horrible!

They were in Virginia when it happened.

The CCW boondoggle is the problem. Too many “good guys” are unarmed. CCW permits should be for felons on probation re-entering society after serving time in prison.

Most staff and congressmen are based in or, obviously travel, everyday into D.C. There is no reasonable way to secure your gun and keep it without running afoul of D.C. Law. What Virginia allows doesn't matter.

That being said, these Republicans are too stupid to realize the value of nationwide constitutional carry. They are in the majority and could pass it tomorrow. Even being sitting ducks and shot at is not enough to remove their incredible stupidity.

For all the convoluted arguments using the Interstate Commerce Clause to justify this or that...the argument that it covers concealed carry reciprocity obvious.

The problem is, the convoluted arguments are how the Fed’s grab power, the obvious arguments are how the Fed’s lose (perceived) power.

It’s only the Socialist retards whom can twist a CLAUSE to supersede the whole of the Constitution, even Rights as expressly observed (2nd A.).

As if the Founders left NO other documentation, or laid out a new form of govt...just to waste the parchment/time.

Course, it takes bigger retards to parrot, “The Courts have spoken”...or believe the same.

I’ve had it with the carving out of special privileges of any kind for various and sundry protected groups. I’ve had it with Affirmative Anything. I say, let the GD politicians be treated like everyone else. I’m all for “equality before the law”. That means the bastids need to start taking hits in large enough numbers that they return this country to constitutional law and give everyone, all of us, our liberty and freedom back that they stole over the past hundred years of Marxocrat rule.

“If you pass a background check and are permitted(?) to buy and own a pistol why can’t you carry it concealed anyway?”

I think as the liklihood for violence escalates, you will find that more and more people will elect to carry a concealed weapon whether or not it’s “lawful” to do so. At the end of the day, the prospect of being prosecuted is trumped by not wanting to have no means for one to protect one’s self.

As bad as the shooter was he would most likely ran out of ammo before killing a significant number of people.

Just like the Draconian bill passed and signed into law after President Reagan was shot - known as the BRADY bill - I want to see legislation passed now after this Congressional shooting, that will not ATTACK THE WEAPON, but rather go after the caustic rhetoric speech attracting Republicans. This new law should require registration, document completion, similar to a Form 4473 and with actionable FBI/DHS background checks before the media is allowed to print and/or air this VENOMOUS, HATE-FILLED DEATH-THREAT POLITCAL SPEECH WHICH IS CERTAINLY INCITING THE LOONIE TRUMP HATERS JUST LIKE YELLING FIRE IN A CROWDED THEATER.This law should ensnare Hollyweird celebrity and sports figures rabid speech just as equally as the media that broadcasts it.

The staffers run afoul of the law only if they get stopped. Congressmen themselves are covered under Article I, Section 6: "They shall in all cases, except treason, felony and breach of the peace, be privileged from arrest during their attendance at the session of their respective Houses, and in going to and returning from the same..."

The problem isn't D.C., it's when they get to work. By the laws that Congress itself has in place nobody, be they Congressman, Senator, or staffer, can bring a firearm into the Capitol or office building. They are defenseless at work by their own choosing.

I know. But they were going directly to DC after practice to start their work day. Understand they wouldn’t have been able to take weapons to DC.

Your post is either incredibly naive or incredibly optimistic. The targets (Republicans) were pinned down in a dugout while the shooter was moving toward this same dugout.

Without a threat from the Capitol Police he would have walked up and been able to shoot them at point blank range.

Even as clearly bad at shooting as he was, (your point I believe) he likely had sufficient ammo to handle this final event.

Moral for the trapped congressmen, — do not hide in a place with no escape route because you do not know how many rounds the shooter has.
