One look at his face (before the incident) made me wonder the same thing. He seemed very ungrounded, very detached from his environment. Look at the pic of him posing with his mother.
That alone is no indication that he would ever become this violent, if deliberate.
Put's the lie to the notion that these were peaceful protesters. Yes the perp behind the wheel should spend the rest of his life in jail for this, but that doesn't excuse the violent thugs either.

after watching that reddit video, I would wager the most serious or fatal injuriea were the attackers of the back window of the driver, backup lights clearly went on but they frenzy had already started, they were running at him even after he gunned it in reverse.

Any time someone who commits violence turns out to be a lefty/socialist/progressive/democrat/muslim it is all waved away with “mental health issues”.
Whenever there is the remotest chance the person can be linked to the right, it is due to right wing extremism, Trump, Palin, racism, homophobia, etc., etc., etc. And if a gun is involved, the gun lobby goes nuts and calls for more infringement on 2A rights. (Has anyone on the left suggested restrictions on issuing drivers licenses to the mentally ill? No? Why not? These people are more likely to kill me on the road that with a gun.)
