Agreed, but they’ve been largely dismissing wind damage in planning for this, looking at rain and flood potential instead. Well reasoned for high Cat 1 or 2 wind, but Cat 4 exceeded most expectations.

“High school levelled”...well sometimes they put temporary classrooms in mobile homes. And other times, in 50 year old massive masonry fortresses. It’s second or third hand info, but backed up by other anecdotes.

Flood event’s one thing. Preceeded with significant structural damages, raises the bar a fair ways.

I’m not surprised that the car wash blew away after looking at that picture. Looks extraordinary flimsy.

The wind damage in Rockport will be catastrophic, but that is a small town. Thank God my parents moved away from there 11 years ago. Now we wait for the main act to unfold, namely the unimaginable rains.

Indeed. 7 inches of rain near here a few years back caused 5 foot deep flash floods. Some of the Harvey forecasts call for 5 ft of rain.

Doesn’t sound good. People yelling for help and there will not be any response.

Eyewall band responsible for Rockport structural damage encompassed Port Aransas, Aransas Pass, Rockport, Fulton, Lamar, Holiday Beach, and potentially Bayside and Ingleside.

Interesting. Rigsby reports “being evacuated to school” while other reports have “high school levelled.” In any event, he will get eyes on quite a bit while relocating.

Jeff Piotrowski re-tweeted that Rockport High School is levelled.

The local paper is reporting (here, at the 11 p.m. post) that part of the roof caved in; but reports of the high school's destruction are inaccurate. Guess we'll know in the morning.

The post at 11:30 pm (in the article) has instructions for people who did have property damage and need federal assistance.

Sounds like it might have been used as a storm shelter.

Early reports are always questionable. Tornado videos abound, with camera operators claiming “total devastation”, while filming bare plywood roofs and yards full of shingles.

;-)

Of course, any roof you’re under, coming off, will generate some adrenalin.
The storm chaser who was relocating to the school changed his mind and decided to stay put.

Probably a good idea. Geometry of this landfall puts wind velocities over Rockport, on the back side of the eye, in the same general range as the front.
