Humans need to become smarter thinkers to beat climate denial
The Guardian ^ | February 6, 2018 | by Dana Nuccitelli

Climate myths are often contradictory – it’s not warming, though it’s warming because of the sun, and really it’s all just an ocean cycle – but they all seem to share one thing in common: logical fallacies and reasoning errors.

John Cook, Peter Ellerton, and David Kinkead have just published a paper in Environmental Research Letters in which they examined 42 common climate myths and found that every single one demonstrates fallacious reasoning.

Cook has previously published research on using ‘misconception-based learning’ to dislodge climate myths from peoples’ brains and replace them with facts, and beating denial by inoculating people against misinformers’ tricks. The idea is that when people are faced with a myth and a competing fact, the fact will more easily win out if the fallacy underpinning the myth is revealed. In fact, these concepts of misconception-based learning and inoculation against myths were the basis of the free online Denial101x course developed by Cook and colleagues.

The authors suggest that their six-step critical thinking process can be deployed via social media through ‘technocognition,’ and in the classroom.

Climate denial suffers badly from a lack of critical thinking, which has spread all the way to the White House. Teaching people to think critically can help prevent it from spreading even further.

Words escape me.....
Yeah, I’m a “critical thinker” alright.
That’s why I know libs are insane...this one is no exception.
He can take his “climate change” and shove it straight up his azz....sideways.

Humans need to be smart enough to buy air conditioners and skimpy bathing suits. We’ll survive just fine, thanks.

“Cook has previously published research on using...”

Cook is a nutcase who has dressed up like a NAZI and published pictures of himself as such on his blog.

I’m glad the Guardian’s writers are smarter thinkers.

I guess my undergrad and grad (to doctorate) degrees in math, physics, and EE were not sufficient for me to deduce that the poor data gathering, poor data analysis, documented lying, and collusion about climate change were due to the fact that I could see for myself that the “science” was pretty much not science at all.

Justly mortified, I shall return to university and obtain the most intellectual degree of all, one which will allow me to overcome the shortcomings of years of real math, physics and engineering.

I shall pursue a journalism degree.

Science uses the scientific method.

Climate “science” does not use the scientific method.

Any questions?

Then then the singular would be HuperSONS. Nice try, but back to the re-education camp you go.

Right there with you. I guess my 3 degrees (one undergrad and two masters) in science and engineering, coupled with 30+ years in computer simulation and large-scale modeling just aren't enough. I just can't see past all the fundamental shortcomings of the climate models, can't see past how they are being intentionally mis-used for wild predictions dozens and hundreds of years in the future when they are demonstrably non-predictive of even current conditions... I must need help with some of that liberal "critical thinking." Clearly a love of algebra, math, physics and precision are not enough. ;-) /s

You clearly lack the critical thinking skills the author is espousing. Your degree MUST be in Womyn and African Studies.

The scary thing is that people who think they can control the climate by alter human economic/social behavior are capable of any atrocity you can think of.

“Global Warming deniers are not critical thinkers”
“Who do you consider to be critical thinkers?”
“People who agree with me”

Even if man made climate change exist (and I don’t believe it does) so what?

The one feature that makes humans the top dog in this world is the fact humans can adapt. While there are various animals that survive in certain ecological ranges, humans can and have survived on virtually every inch of earth. No other species can make that claim.

If it gets too warm we adjust, if it gets too cold, we adjust, if the water level rises we move, if the water level lowers we move.

The idea that governments must steal the wealth of their citizens in order to save them is just so wrong that in the end, people will need to rise up and remove those in the the government that advocate such theft

Actually teaching people to think critically would lead to the collapse of your movement in 30 days.
