The Week ^ | February 8, 2018 | Ryan Cooper

Student loan debt is a crushing problem in America. Over 44 million people have such loans, with an average balance of about $30,000 — making for a total debt pile of $1.4 trillion. Unsurprisingly, people often struggle to repay these debts with their entry-level wages after graduating. Student debt is now the most common form of troubled debt, with about 11 percent of them 90 days or more delinquent. Worse still, thanks to Republicans and neoliberal Democrats alike, they are almost impossible to discharge in bankruptcy.

End all government involvement in education and I would support this.

AGREE!

Student loans only prop up outrageous tuitions and unjustified tuition increases for the liberal cesspool of higher education.

Universities were allowed to harvest students for their loans and used the proceeds to subsidize worthless SJW “perfessers,” and a a bonus they could raise tuition as high as they wanted because the dumb 18-year olds would just borrow it without question.

Exactly, the universities are the ones who ripped them off for huge amounts of money for very little real education.

Lets be honest in this. The government operates on cash flow. The money has been spent and we will never collect it. Stop the current cash flow and see what happens in the market place of education...................

So the jist of the article is “Have the government pay all the lenders, then make college free so that there is never student loan debt again”. Wow.

When you are saddled with $40K in school debt for Computer Programming but find out that the jobs are filled with H1-B people and you end up at Best Buy, you might have been scammed by people pushing college. When you go to college for a teaching degree in English but have to take classes totally unrelated to your degree because the College Accreditation rules and desire of the college to keep useless departments open, you much have been scammed by people pushing college.

It is time to totally revamp the requirements for a college degree. So many useless classes, so many requirements that have nothing to do with your program, so many useless departments, and so many inflated college administration fees and people.

Same here. I paid off close to $100k of law school loans in 5 years of working my butt off at a hoity-toity DC law firm. I want my money back, too.

I definitely think the kids should pay these back, effectively erasing them.

Interestingly, it just struck me that if I was a precious snowflake with a lot of student loan debt, I’d be crazy to make any more payments if I thought the government was going to forgive these debts.

The way to prevent that is to come down hard on those that are behind. Remove the incentive to “wait for a socialist regime”.

Exactly! They charge an astronomical amount of money for their product with no accountability when it fails the consumer.
