Deputy who didn’t stop Florida shooting thinks he ‘did a good job’

The sheriff’s deputy who failed to engage the shooter at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School “believed he did a good job” because he called in the location of the massacre and gave a description of the shooter, a top union official said Thursday.

School resource officer Scot Peterson, who resigned in disgrace from the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, was “distraught” about shooting that killed 17 people — but believed he did his duty, according to the president of the Broward Sheriff’s Office Deputies Association.

“He believed he did a good job calling in the location, setting up the perimeter and calling in the description (of Cruz),” said the union official, Jim Bell.

And Peter Wang 15 year old unarmed JROTC Cadet gave his live while saving fellow students. Think about that here’s a 15 year old boy who only train was a couple of years of JROTC and he did better than the cops. Despite what a few think the JROTC Cadets actions were clearly a case of above and beyond in the finest tradition of the American Military.

According to reports, what happened is the armed deputy stood outside behind cover for about 4 minutes while fire alarms blared, rounds going off, people running, people dying, while he talked on the phone or radio, allegedly setting up a perimeter which also didn’t stop the suspect.

It sounds like he was a security “monitor”.

the FBI had a chance to stop this before it started.

I believe the FBI had a chance to stop many of the previous school shootings due to information they had on the shooters. These crises could have been averted, but then that wouldn't have fit the liberal agenda.

Then there are the incidents where the FBI simply attacked and killed American citizens.

Ska-rew the corrupt bastards...shut em down.

The armed officer was not at the site when the firing started.

He had to travel to the building, find out where the shooter was, and confront the possibility there was more than one shooter.

He likely had a firearm holding about ten shots. The shooter could easily pick him off at a distance, It would have been a lot harder for him to hit the shooter vs the shooter hitting him.

Add to this the location of the shooter in relation to where the officer entered the building. He may have been at one entrance hoping he would exit there, but the suspect left via an alternate route.

We don’t know what the hallways were like, how many kids still on campus and in the background of many possible shot scenarios.

Folks, we weren’t there.

Everyone down there is covering their ass. The police are. The school officials are. The public placement agency is. Counseling services are. The courts likely are.

So some of these entities are now trash-talking the officer on site. Who could have seen this coming.

To my way of thinking, there’s a whole hell of a lot of talking and insulting going on my folks who should be too embarrassed to open their mouths at all on the topic.

This officer may or may not have been able to do anything.

I have seen several people touch on the fact some folks sacrificed their lives. Yes they did. They were caught in the situation and would have likely died no matter what, and they tried to make a difference.

This officer was not caught with no escape route, and he is not required to walk into a situation where he may not be able to affect a solution to the problem.

Suicide is not a job requirement, and well meaning attempts to take down the perp may in fact result in other deaths that may not have taken place.

If this guy tried to enter the crime scene and get the drop on this guy, the guy could have fired more shots at him, and hit other students so more than 17 would have died.

We cannot know all the loose ends here, and it gets really tiresome watching some arm chair quarterbacks act as if they can.

The stampeded to denigrate this guy reveals people to be extremely ignorant.

It seemed to me that Kilt was stating facts about the incident. Other than that, the officer disgraced himself, his department, and other officers. In this incident there is no excuse for “setting up a perimeter” while someone was actively killing students. What he needed to do was to give an update of his location while moving to engage the shooter so that other officers, who were watching a 20 minute delay, could know where the activity was occurring in real time.

What really pisses me off is the kids who escaped being shot and dealing with the terror, but then having to join a f’ing human centipede chain to get out of the area, with their hands on the shoulders of those before them. I watched far to much footage of Nazi doing the same to the Jews. Is this conditioning for when it comes time to run to the ditch?

I understand that. I was addressing how a perimeter is set up. It doesn’t mean this deputy did it at all, did it right, or there weren’t other failures.

Again, I was simply addressing how perimeters are set up (in response to a FReeper who laughed at the idea that 1 deputy could set up a perimeter).

That’s why I despise unions of all kinds and that includes police and fire. Just like communism, makes everyone into lazy incompetent leeches.

Sheriff Israel said Peterson was standing outside the school building while the shooting was going on. Four minutes of the six Cruz was in the building.

How many officers responded to this call? Have any idea. 5, 10, 25, 50?

Listing to you folks it sounds as if you think they only should have sent out one officer to end this.

Folks, please ease off.

Here's the question for you D1: Would you have gone in, even with possibly just a 10-shot magazine, and possible an extra-magazine, and engaged the shooter knowing the shooter was killing people inside? I'm talking about you now, not this SRO.

If he set up a perimeter, how did the shooter get away? Not much of a perimeter.

Clearly he used to work for CTU.

School officer stood outside for 4 minutes doing ‘nothing’ during massacre:

When asked by reporters to describe how the video made him feel, Sheriff Israel responded, “Sick to my stomach” and “devastated.”

“It doesn’t matter who went in first, it doesn’t matter in what order you went in,” he said. “What matters is that when we in law enforcement arrive at an active shooter, we go in and address the target and that’s what should have been done.”
