In 30 years of writing op-ed columns for the Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times, I'm hard pressed to recall making any political predictions. I prefer to leave it to the Chicago Tribune's Eric Zorn. But here comes an exception.
Bruce Rauner has slit his throat, with his general incompetence and a campaign that was so dishonest that it set some sort of record in a state where truth is typically flushable. The way he failed to get a single one of his goals accomplished in his three and a half years as governor is by itself a flop worthy of retiring him. But after having skillfully muted social conservatives in his successful 2014 campaign by promising an entirely fiscal administration, he turned on them by signing on to his wife's "progressive" social agenda. He now has placed the conservative Republican base in the unenviable position of voting for Rauner or not voting and handing over the governorship to the Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan's lickspittle J.B. Pritzker. It's possible that just enough conservatives will stay home to completely return Illinois to the autocratic and destructive Democratic machine.

Is there not even one decent conservative politician in the state of ILL and annoyed? Illinois is California without the nice weather, beaches, mountains and vineyards.
I’m kinda torn. Maybe allowing Pritzker to become Gov. will hasten the demise, and the sooner the state collapses the sooner someone can try to put it back together again.
Or will it be like a hard-boiled version of Humpty that doesn’t break but just rots?
If Ives could not beat pro-abortion, spread the wealth communist Rauner in a REPUBLICAN primary by a decisive margin, I am afraid she had even less chance to beat JB Pritzker, in very blue & democrat machine controlled Illinois. JB is very rich, has deep roots in the Chicago machine and will probably win easily over Rauner.
Fine, hand the governorship to Madigan and the fat Pritzker spawn. You’ll really show them!
Illinois New York California Connecticut New Jersey Massachusetts Maryland Delaware Oregon Washington State and District Colorado Maine Hawaii and Vermont are gone. They are wastelands that will be drags on American greatness as far as the eye can see so thanks for your concern but it really doesn’t mean a thing one way or the other.
I get that a bunch of crybabies aren’t happy that Rauner won. I’m not happy with him about abortion and sanctuary cities, either, but giving a PRITZKER the reins because you’re upset? I once sat in on a commerce department conference call when J.B.’s less fat sister, Penny, was in charge there. The woman had a script she read and couldn’t even do that. These are people who are literally useless and will let Madigan run the state further down the tubes.
I’m sure that’s what Dennis Byrne really wants, no doubt, but, eh, why help them?
Actually, no, we KNOW she lost since registered republicans have to take republican ballots unless they choose to declare otherwise in Illinois. It’s shocking how many people think this state has a real “open” primary. Ives couldn’t even win in her home county, DuPage. Face it, she was a crap candidate who shot herself in the foot by making a stupid ad that allowed the media to paint her as racist from day one.
