WASHINGTON (AP) President Donald Trump grudgingly signed a $1.3 trillion federal spending measure Friday and averted a midnight government shutdown but only after undercutting his own negotiators and setting off a mini-panic with a last-minute veto threat. The episode further eroded the already damaged credibility of both the president and a White House staff that had assured the nation he was onboard.
Trump said he was very disappointed in the package, in part because it did not fully pay for his planned border wall with Mexico and did not extend protection from deportation to some 700,000 Dreamer immigrants due to lose coverage under a program the president himself has moved to eliminate.
But Trump praised the bills provisions to increase military spending and said he had no choice but to fund our military.
My highest duty is to keep America safe, he said.

If I was Trump I’d start putting messages out through back channels that I was considering running for re-election as a Democrat.
The only saving grace right now for Trump is to have a major victory of indicting hillary and comey and have them sent to a military tribunal. This would take the wind out of the swamp.
The bill authorizes the spending, or requires it has to happen, with some kind of cosmic penalty if it is not spent? The latter sounds like Bill Clinton’s philosophy; “I can, therefore I must.”
Mild setback.
considering the other important stuff he has accomplished, I’m still good.
I don’t believe he will allow this again without a wall but, funny how this is timed to meet the midterms.
The ONLY thing our side got was the funding for the military; everything else benefitted the Rats.
The $1.6 billion for border security does NOT apply to the building of any wall: It is all for the repair or replacement of existing fencing.
We got royally hosed on this deal.
That’s what I thought until a Freeper posted this on another thread. Looks like our President outsmarted the Dem/Pub traitors after all....

perhaps now he can sign some global warming deals while banning assault rifles
He just signed away a second term, but before that he will be surely impeached in 2019; I don’t know if he will be convicted, but impeachment is likely. He didn’t get border wall funding which he claimed was his priority.

Me, too. And it's almost like they're asking for it. Bush, Obama and Trump all campaigned on reducing our military profile, yet the endless wars continue. Bush and Trump both campaigned on fiscal responsibility. Yet the endless spending continues. At some point, people are going to give up on elections.
My faith in God is solid. Man, not so much.
Hey, Trump himself told us we’d get tired of all the winning.
I understand.
But he still could have stuck to his guns, shut the damn govern mentioned down and played hardball with them. He was even thinking of vetoing it.
What I think doesn’t matter. I still support him.
But thus stunt lost him votes - a lot of them
And it got him NONE.
That’s the way I see it. I’m sure the other side will do everything in its power to keep the queers and trannies on active duty so that the medical expenses their lifestyles produce can be paid by us taxpayers. I suspect we have long passed the point of no return and the only thing that would turn it back on course would be some catastrophic event like another world war or prolonged volcanic winter or big asteroid strike.
Really? Then I'm a traitor also, because those monsters sell fetus and baby body parts, not to mention killing them in any way they can. I believe they were just re-funded with another 500 million of taxpayer money in this atrocious Omnibus Bill.
Thanks Trump. You couldn't possibly have insisted on a separate Military Appropriations bill?
Do a search on Impoundment Act.
...and what did he get for his negotiation?
Karen McDougal
He made a mistake. He betrayed EACH AND EVERY CONSTITUENCY WHICH PUT HIM IN OFFICE.
I hope he recovers, but I doubt it. His backers were made into laughing stocks.
“I see; so we need more military funding to support useless ventures in places like Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq.”
So we don’t need a military, because they only do “useless ventures”. Thanks for enlightening me. Good to know. Why not just disband them all? Quit worrying about NK and Iran and let China have whole the South China Sea.
I don’t like our intervention in Syria, or our doomed strategy in Afghanistan, but that’s no reason to ignore real threats and leave our military a hollow shell.
