Coming Out as a Libertarian
6/8//18 | self

Posted on 06/08/2018 8:59:15 PM PDT by ChinaGotTheGoodsOnClinton

I am really ticked off that the government spied on a presidential campaign and investigated and exonerated the other major parties nominee after giving everyone and their uncles' immunity. There is no other way to explain this other than to say that no other explanation makes sense but we have Mueller, who was in charge of the FBI during the 9-11 attacks. His FBI receives numerous tips that Saudi nationals on student visas were taking extensive airline flight training in Florida but were strangely not concerned about landings. His response to the disaster was the fiasco the FBI, SAIC, virtual casefile debacle, a case study in secure development projects going off the rails. To put it as kindly as possible “Farris” Mueller is a tool, better at kissing deep-state behinds than directing the FBI to keep Americans safe.

But equally appalling is the Republican response. Paul Ryan has said recently we don’t know yet if the FBI leadership had done anything wrong, and Tea Party darling and Permanent Intelligence Select Committee Chair Trey Gowdy saying words to the effect that if the evidence existed to start an espionage probe, citizens should be happy one was started. The idea of the federal government using its massive signals intelligence capabilities against not a threat to the US, but against a political opponent is a civil libertarian's doomsday scenario. This is what was argued would happen if the PATRIOT Act was passed, and it turns out we were right all along.

And nobody has noticed!

Thanks for that. We need to stick together.

I still remember worrying if Reno would subpoena Jim’s records...

I tell people I have libertarian leanings but not that I’m a libertarian. I cannot go along with open borders (that’s insanity) and I favor a strong national defense.

Broadly speaking I agree with them on the vast majority of issues but not all and some of the really extreme ones advocate things like the total legalization of all drugs including the really destructive ones like Cocaine and Heroine and Meth and Opiods etc that I just can’t agree with.

I also think they’re naive to just believe the market by itself can/will correct for others’ protectionism. In general I’m not a protectionist but I fully recognize other countries can and sometimes do try to pick off your country’s companies in key areas, steal their technology, subsidize their own to gain an unfair advantage, etc etc. A national government has to respond to that. You can’t just let others use the power of their governments to skew world markets in favor of their companies to the detriment of yours AND you have to take national security into account in sensitive areas.

I am an Articles of Confederationarian.

No government, including our Republic, is trustworthy.

Our missed opportunity was when Madison & Hamilton hijacked the A of C and pushed them aside to write a constitution for a central government.

Only competition contains potential liberty - not a central government.

I’m a principally conservative libertarian but want little to do with the ridiculous Libertarian Party. I’m a registered Republican and will remain so indefinitely.

The Patriot Act was an unfortunate side-effect of Jamie Gorelick’s wall

I'm a classic liberal. The Libertarian party has nothing to do with libertarianism/classic liberal.

The Libertarian party today is more of a new type of socialism then it has anything to do with capitalism. Using their own scale the party itself would be in the middle left quadrant.

Balderdash. I'm not a member of LPUSA, and although their most recent Presidential candidate—and especially their candidate for Vice President—might fit that description, the fact is that much of the rank and file party membership were furious with those choices, and staunchly believe in free enterprise, the Second Amendment (not to mention the rest of the Bill of Rights), original intent (for instance they despise the perversion of the Commerce Clause, just as conservatives do), and many of them are also more hawkish on national defense than one might think.

No member of any political party agrees 100% with that party's national platform—except Democrats, of course—but to call the LPUSA (whose ticket Ron Paul has run for President on) "left" or "socialist" in any significant way is simply an absurd smear. The LPUSA certainly hates socialism more than the GOP, it would appear.

For instance, replace all GOP members of Congress with LPUSA "whackos", and see if things like Obamacare and the Progressive Income Tax aren't repealed in a New York minute. Socialism, my -ss.

Indeed, one of the reasons Donald Trump won the Presidency in 2016 was that disenchanted libertarians and LPUSA members ignored the Johnson/Weld ticket and instead voted for Donald J. Trump in droves—even though in many case some had significant philosophical reservations. I mean let's be honest—President Trump isn't exactly an expert on the Constitution, or even a student of it...

Furious or not Gary Johnson and that group has changed that party to a new form of socialism.

Much as I loathe Mueller, you are factually dead wrong about your statement above. Mueller was sworn in as FBI director on September 4, 2001 only one week before the September 11, 2001 attacks. It was not "his" FBI during the lead up to those attacks.

I used to be a member of the Libertarian Party, but then they turned their main focus to drug legalization rather than reduction in government. Now I consider myself small-l libertarian nationalist.

The current real function of the Libertarian Party is to split the conservative vote and elect the Democrat. In the US, with our system, the only path to victory involves taking the Republican Party away from the RINOs.

You echo my sentiments entirely. Only thing different for me is I was a member in the early 80’s. I dropped them when I realized they really had no strategy to win or take office.

Far as I can tell the libertarians have never accomplished anything of substance. They talk a lot but never accomplish anything except to weaken republicans to facilitate Rat party wins. Most support open borders, no public health funding, power to the LGBTP alliance, and a castrated military.

No they haven't—and I notice you provided no evidence to support such a ludicrous claim. Look at the party platform.

Now, how about my claim of what would happen for "conservative" causes like the repeal of Obamacare, the Progressive income tax, the shrinking Welfare State, etc., if every Republican in (along with the President)—the size of the federal government would start shrinking so fast it would make the Uniparty's head explode.

Despite their shortcomings, libertarians and the LPUSA are light years beyond Republicans in their passion for limited government—but you already knew that...

Who cares? If libertarians or the LPUSA "socialists" were in control, they'd be apathetic as well—they might even endorse such Tyranny, like Trey Gowdy and his ilk did...</Steve Van Doorn>
