Levin: Paul Ryan was dead wrong on birthright citizenship. Here’s how

Tuesday on the radio, LevinTV host Mark Levin ripped Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, R-Wisc., for his response to President Trump’s statement that he plans to issue an executive order to end birthright citizenship.

Ryan claimed the 14th Amendment creates the birthright citizenship and that therefore such an executive order would be unconstitutional.

“There’s been no law passed that conveys birthright citizenship onto illegal aliens. There’s been no Supreme Court decision that definitively confers birthright citizenship onto illegal alien children. Nobody’s a hundred percent certain how this came to be. But everybody seems to be a hundred percent certain that the president can’t fix it. … Well, does the Constitution confer birthright citizenship on the children of illegal aliens? Of course it doesn’t!”

Levin replayed a clip from his show in 2015, in which he laid out the stated purpose of the 14th Amendment and read Senator Jacob Howard’s explanation.

“‘This will not of course include persons born in the United States who are foreigners, aliens … but will include every other class of persons. It settles the great question of citizenship.’ … Is it not plain English? Is he not as clear as can be that it does not include aliens, it does not include foreigners. … The republican basis for citizenship is consent! Consent of the country! You can’t self-immigrate. You can’t claim jurisdiction because you happen to walk into the United States.”

“What is the bottom line here? Let’s number this: They wanted to make certain that former slaves would be treated as citizens of the United States, because certain states were still resistant. … They exempted Indians, because Indians still, certainly back then, were often considered citizens of particular tribes. But these actually were very forward-looking individuals. They specifically excluded aliens and foreigners.”

Will Paul Ryan and John McCain be acknowledged in history books (if civilization survives and if there are history books) as two of the most notorious traitors of all time?

McCain was mentally sick, I get that. But Paul Ryan? Whatever motivates him to be so despicable?

Also, renting a house or letting illegals stay at your place should be prosecuted as harboring a fugitive.

Any business transaction with an illegal should be prosecuted as aiding and abetting criminals.

Nowhere to live, nowhere to work, no bank accounts, no drivers licenses, and no sending money back home. That would certainly slow down the mass of people that want to come here illegally. It wouldn’t even need new laws.

Let’s assume the drafters of that amendment were not morons. They had a choice between:

1. “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside,”

and

2. “All persons born or naturalized in the United States are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.”

They chose and ratified the second version. The only logical interpretation is that the phrase “and subject to the jurisdiction thereof” was intended to have a restrictive meaning. President Trump is correct.

Subsequent laws do not change the Constitution.

Natural born citizens have ONE nationality.

Cruz was born with THREE.

Canadian by birth, Cuban from his father, American on his mother’s side.

He is not naturally an American.

Citizen at birth was specifically rejected by the founders as insufficient to prevent the introduction of foreign influence on the Presidency.

They chose natural born citizen as more restrictive as it excludes the children of foreign nationals.

They have to sell out before they get to the upper echelons in the Republican Party. If anyone slips by, they don't get full support.

In OH, the nasty campaign advertising is so extreme that one has to vote for who is less awful so the most awful person won't win. The dems now have a message that's probably a winner. The sleazeballs running for Governor and US Senator have collected financing from pharmaceutical companies and done nothing to lower costs. Not that the new sleazeballs will be any better.

The Democrats are trying the same tactic against Dave Brat here. I think it’s a theme they are using nationally.

You said you don't think the issue of collecting campaign contributions from pharmaceutical companies and doing nothing to lower prices won't work. It might work. How THE HECK do they MAGA if they've been bought and paid for?

The Republicans here can't even articulate the issues they ran on. That indicates they didn't believe them in the first place. The response should be making Obamacare optional thus increasing competition for insurance, pharmaceutical, and other medical costs would lower prices and encourage lower-cost alternatives.

I don ‘t know which candidates in OH that you are referring to, but many of them are Bush League Republicans that should be replaced. I’d prefer they not be replaced by Democrats, but if they aren’t defeated in a primary, that may happen.

Dave Brat is one of the best in Congress.
He is the only GOP rep that was rated 100% by NumbersUSA.
We already got rid of our Bush League Republican when we Cantorized the weasel Eric Cantor in 2014.

Classic Levin. When he omits the part of the quote that guts his argument - "...who belong to the families of ambassadors or foreign ministers accredited to the Government of the United States..." you know he has nothing but bluster.
