Teachers should not carry guns, despite alarming school shootings (not a total barf alert)
The Hill ^ | May 29, 2022 | Tracy Walder

As a teacher, mother of an elementary school student in Texas, and someone who once carried a gun for a living and has been trained in situational awareness and firearm tactics, no one perhaps is more prepared than I to carry a gun in my classroom. But I would never want to.

...most teachers are not trained in situational awareness. It is not hard to learn to shoot a gun; teachers could learn this with a few days of training. What takes far longer, however, is learning to respond properly to an active shooter.

As a former staff operations officer at the CIA and former FBI special agent, I have undergone extensive training and am confident in my ability to run toward a violent situation, rather than away from it. But asking teachers to carry weapons and assuming they will be prepared for such a situation is risky. My training was rife with high-pressure scenarios, to work on a phenomenon known as “fear extinction.” This is where you learn to lower your fear response after multiple exposures to a stimulus. To dampen the pre-conditioned fear response to an active shooter scenario would require working with teachers on a case-by-case basis.

...

Additionally, there is confusion regarding the actions of police and a school resource officer in Uvalde. Rather than arming teachers, perhaps we need to reconsider how we train police officers....According to the program guide for the Bexar County Policy Academy in San Antonio, the largest city near Uvalde, there is not a section of training dedicated to situational awareness, mental toughness, or fear extinction.

“and access to a safe with some real firepower?”

Why a safe??? You’re from a liberal State, aren’t you? You know, one of those States where they say lock up the guns at all times.

Relublicans should dbe making a huge issue of this stating “we, agaisnt our better judgement, allowed you on the left to try your idiotic gun free zones, and the results speak, for themselves. You al. Failed miserably! And many dozens of kid”s lives were lost because you on the left are so anit gun that you cant even atand tk have guns in the schools to protect the lives of innocent children. Now get out of the way and allow the adults in the room, us, to fix the problem once and for all!”

Teachers who teach CRT and want to sexualize kids definitely cannot be trusted with weapons.

You are right, and I agree with the post that some (actually many) teachers today are not prepared with the skill set needed to be a help. but the fact that some teachers may be armed is certainly a deterrent.

The situation in Israel is of interest because gun slinging members of the IDF are everywhere, (schools, malls, Etc. I was there and I saw them. And I felt very safe to have them nearby) and they were likely trained in exactly the situational awareness to deal with terrorism.

“The actual solution is homeschooling.”

—————————————

Nice fantasy. Homeschooling, like marriage, is for white people.

The number of homeschooled students increased from 850,000 in 1999 to 1,690,000 in 2016, and the percentage of students who were homeschooled increased from 1.7 percent to 3.3 percent over the same time period.

In 2016, the percentage of students who were homeschooled was higher for White (3.8 percent) and Hispanic (3.5 percent) students than for Black (1.9 percent) and Asian (1.4 percent) students.

more.

Why was that door propped open?

Based on what I’ve read, I believe a teacher left the building after the lockdown order was issued and went to her car to retrieve her cell phone. She propped open the door on her way out and this was noticed by the killer who was outside at the time shooting at passersby in the street. The teacher then re-entered the school leaving the propped door open. Open for the killer to walk in and begin his deadly massacre.

Guesswork on my part. But it seems plausible.

In the past, anti-gun radicals have had no problem with cops in schools. As long as the cops WERE NOT ARMED!

‘When you kick God out of government schools and forbid reading the Bible and the Constitution, teachers BETTER carry guns.’

prayers and scripture readings in churches haven’t prevented mayhem from happening (ever), what makes you think that doing so in schools would acheive any better results...?

“I don’t think anyone is arguing that we should have teachers carrying guns like cowboys did in those old westerns.”

A. I would argue exactly that teachers should be armed;

B. Why do you suppose cowboys carried guns?

M-1 Carbine. Good choice. Light. Handy. Same energy at 100 yards as a 357’s muzzle energy. Not as much over penetration as a 223.

Most teachers don’t have the right kind of personality for being armed. Of course, there are a few who do, but it’s not worth the time to arm and train them.
Let the cops do the job.

If you ever saw the luxury that most school administrators work in you’d know why money for security is short.

Put an in-wall gun safe in every classroom and change the signs on the doors from “Gun-Free Zone” to “Teachers and Staff are Armed”

Then train those teachers who are willing to keep a gun in their safes to use them. They don’t all have to be armed, but it would get the damned signs off the doors and give these monsters reason to go elsewhere instead of assuring their safe entrance. Then there’s the plus that one of those guns will be put to its intended use someday.

You really wanna give these teachers guns, AND entrust your child's life (and brain) to them?

The author claims superior expertise (and authority) as a former official in CIA and FBI.

Assuming she is telling the truth about her prior lives, I’d still recommend caution.

The intel agencies frequently confuse themselves with special ops personnel. They are mistaken in believing they measure up. They ought to stick to collecting intel information. It’s something they have been reasonably good at, now and then.

FBI agents have come to believe they are street cops. That isn’t what their agency was created to do, and they are out of their depth when trying to take on street-cop duties. And they cannot hope to come up to the bar, in counterintel and security threats originating outside our borders (assuming they haven’t merely devolved into the dirty-ops arm of the Left).

As far as my own expertise and authority goes, I spent more than two decades while on active duty, working closely with intel and security agencies. All of them.

Really, no one is trained enough in active shooter situations, not even cops. I remember my employer hiring a trainer and having a class on what to do in that situation, but really, you just have to have the right mindset. The right mindset is one of sacrifice, that you will do what it takes to protect others regardless of the danger to yourself. Even cops have a problem with this one, as we’ve seen.
