Critic Complains That Show Set in 1500s Japan Didn't Have Any Black Characters
Western Journal ^ | 3/15/23 | Michael Austin

The reviews for Disney-owned FX’s new hit miniseries “Shōgun” have been absolutely glowing.

That is, apart from one notable exception.

The series, based on a 1975 novel by James Clavell, follows the story of an English explorer in the 1500s who finds himself smack-dab in the middle of an intense political conflict unfolding in the Japanese empire.

Though many seem to be enjoying the show, one critic — writer William Spivey — felt it was failing for one major reason: There is no black representation.

The article, which originated as a blog on Medium, has received some seriously harsh criticism, to say the least.

The general public appears to be getting sick of diversity and inclusion being placed above accurate historical storytelling.

Re: "Nearly all scientists are black in movies now..."

My first recollection of a brilliant Black engineer or scientist was Barney in Mission Impossible (1966).

They had a still photo of Barney holding a slide rule.

Most Americans under age 40 do not even know what a slide rule is!

Also, in current day USA TV ads, 50% of the couples are Black male/white female.

They do get one thing right - a solid majority of white males are not attracted to Black women.

The flip side of that, a solid majority of white males are clearly interested in Asian females, but most Asian women have very little interest in white males.

I live in a suburb of Seattle that is 40% Asian.

Asian/white couples here are almost all Asian male/white female.

DEI only applies to one group of people - this crap started during the Obama years, so there's the clue.

Sorry, but 0 didn’t start this DEI stuff. I went to a DEI training session in 1981 in Silicon Valley; 0 accelerated it.

I am sure he would approve of a white man representing Martin Luther King in a movie. LOL

“ Yeah, exactly how many black Africans were in Japan at the time?”

It’s quite likely the Portuguese had African slaves on their ships and as laborers in their colonies and outposts, but I’m not sure if any made it to Japan. However, since this is fiction, I won’t be surprised if somebody sues the writers for some DEI slight.

There’s a thesis topic for your Ph.D. in Afro-American Studies. You’d probably get a full-ride scholarship to cover that one.

There were a few, and one who became famous, but with Japan we're at the point where we were with medieval England 20 years ago. Working Black characters into the show for DEI would just look ridiculous and stupid.

Another interesting thing: for a while the Portuguese navigators were enslaving Chinese and Japanese and taking them back to Portugal and the colonies. The Japanese rulers didn't like it and made them stop.

Every time I see a mention of SHOGUN I am reminded of an earlier novel Daishi-San by Robert Lund, published in 1961.

A novel based on the romantic true adventure of an English sea captain who became the right hand of the ruler of Imperial Japan 350 years ago.

Had a black friend recently return from a trip to Japan.

He loved all things Japanese. He read manga. He watched anime. Loved sushi. He saved for years for the trip. Two weeks in Japan. Included Tokyo Disneyland.

He was not the same when he got back.

He said he never understood racism...real racism...until he went to Japan. He said he felt like an exhibit, an animal on display. He was stared at and most of them were angry. He says that at more than one restaurant he was ignored by the staff, especially when they were outside of the more urban areas. He learned a lot of Japanese so he could communicate, but he said they felt very free to correct him, when he saw white tourists also mispronouncing words the natives smiled and encouraged them. He couldn’t wait to go home.

He did say that it gave him a new perspective on racism in the US. We, he now says, are not really racist.

In the late 1500s, At least one;

who-was-yasuke-japans-first-black-samurai

"Though Yasuke was the only Black samurai in Nobunaga’s army, he was by no means the only African present in Japan at the time. “Several hundred African people lived in Japan during the 16th century,” says Doan. “[They] worked as interpreters, soldiers, entertainers” and more. She says that Kyoto’s Japanese residents would have been surprised by Yasuke’s “foreignness” but likely wouldn’t have exhibited prejudice based on his skin color. According to Lockley, Nobunaga was a powerful man whom few were willing to challenge, so his decision to employ Yasuke wasn’t controversial. In fact, the samurai proved to be quite popular among locals, who flocked to catch a glimpse of him."

Well this idiot didn't help change Japanese racial perceptions for the better.

So if Asian men often date white women, and Asian women do NOT date equal numbers of white men, who do they date? Each other? Black guys? Go without any dates?

My suspicion is Asian women - who tend to be smart an driven (speaking as a white guy married to one) - do NOT want to date soy boys. And even in the late 90s, when I lived north of Seattle, Seattle had more than its fair share of soy boys.

I could also see where some white guy addicted to online games and eating potato chips might find Asian women intimidating. The Asian women I’ve known work hard, value achievement and despise lazy guys.

It probably doesn’t help that a number of US military bases have lots of blacks and those blacks have committed more than their fair share of rapes and robberies. When I was in Okinawa, black guys DID have problems being served. White guys did too because the natives were not too fond of any military guys, but they really disliked the black military guys.

Still, in my travels, I find the US and the UK the least racist places I’ve been. Wish a lot more American blacks would try living overseas for a while, including in Africa. Think they’d come crawling back looking forward to being in the “Good Old USA”!
