Yes, this is another firearms vanity.
The fantasy condition is this:
For whatever reason, you have to choose one firearm to keep.
This assumes that you also have a decent supply of ammunition to go with it.
For purposes of this discussion we will assume that there is no change in current laws. You are limited to one gun by financial circumstances.
I have narrowed my choices down to a handgun, one small enough to conceal. That still leaves a lot of room for consideration.
Marlin Camp Carbines also come in 9mm and .40 cal. You can find them used. Same clips as Smith & Wesson. I was told, however, that their barrels aren't as thick as the Ruger and so you start to lose accuracy after 10 rounds due to thermal expansion effects.
It is a real 'accessory' and is not treated as a firearm. They are illegal in California, since the resultant combo is illegal. I saw several at a recent gun show and it took the guy about 12 seconds to convert from pistol to carbine.
The one's they had there were the 1911 version, but the Glocks are available now as well.

For the 1911 fans...
Note: when you see a picture and wonder where it came from, on a pc, you can right-click the image and choose 'properties' and it will reveal it's source.

I was just the one of the resident "Butcher's" and I had a special place in my heart for the "officers" as well.
ah the memories of thrashing the warpigs and getting paid "per diem" to do it.
When did your brother do his time as a SERE instructor?

Accuracy International's 'Arctic Warfare Magnum' in .338 Lapua Magnum.
... and a Ghillie suit.
It happens. I have fired off a post or two and afterwards found my mouse was stuck on FullAuto. :)
You and me both.
Still, think about it. If you could only have one firearm what would you pick?
Yeah.... yeah find that layin around on store shelves everywhere.
Ammo has varied sizes of shot-shells, plus slugs, plus exotics some of which you can load yourself. [3/8inch lead sinkers crimped on thin aircraft cable or piano wire; tacks; rocksalt; etc.]
Apply hacksaw to spare barrel and instant hogsleg.
Best all-around short to medium distance firearm.
Interesting choice.
My origional choice was a handgun (I am a city dweller) and .22 is a good choice for ammo availabilty.
A .22 does not have stopping power. You have to go with headshots.
