"Veteran's Day--What will YOU be doing???"

In just a few days VETERAN'S DAY will be here.
In this current wave of Patriotism.....a question comes up.
What will YOU do this VETERAN'S DAY to show those who have put their lives, and are currently putting their lives, "on the line" that you appreciate what they have done...and what they are doing??
Will you finally find that Viet Vet and tell him/her "WELCOME HOME!!"??
Will you take your children to a Veteran's Hospital...and listen to an aging WWII Vet tell you of his days???
Will you tell your Father...Uncle...Brother...that you are glad they made it home from the frozen Korean landscape???
It's only a few days to "VETERAN'S DAY"..........
Make it count.

This Veterans Day
We will attend a Veterans Day Parade before we will bury my brother a Vietnam Veteran who died from lung cancer, 52 years old.

Aside from that I will make a phone call as I normally do to a "brother" who served, as I, in RVN and we will each thank each other for being faithful and serving and surviving. I will stand at attention and snap a still sharp hand salute to the flag in front of my house and shed a tear for those no longer present. I typically have done similar for those with whom I served in the ROK. This year I'll extend that rememberance to your "brothers", and especially to those who are serving today.

Sorry, I can't sign your petition. I served for two years (1952-53), including a tour in the Republic of Korea. Fortunately, I came home safely and I don't think that the government (really the taxpayers) owe me a damned thing.
They gave me a GI loan to buy a house and they gave me the GI Bill, with which I got an EE degree. The taxpayers have more than "re-paid" me.
I do feel that the government owes care and attention to any veteran with a service connected disability and as far as I know, they are being taken care of. If not, they should be. As for the rest of us, we should take care of ourselves.

My group is holding a benefit for the families of our troops. We have a base right here in our town. The 127th air force reserve wing just got called up yesterday. The money goes to the Family Services Fund on the base. We just wanted to be able to say thank you in person and raise some money for the families.

Welcome home and thank you, sir! I'm trying to get permission from the powers that be to take my grandkids to the Veteran's day parade. The 30 something crowd around here wants to play down the patriotism a bit too much to suit me. What will you be doing, my dear?

WE have our usual memorial service at 11 am with an additional dedication service at 2pm for the new memorial park. I'll be at both as a member of the American Legion firing squad/honor gaurd. I'm hoping for a larger crowd than we usually have. Our numbers at the post, along with the VFW are getting smaller.

I'll be doing what I usually do on the weekend closest to Veteran's Day. I will be jumping in the stick of other former airborne types from Ranger, USMC Recons, SF, SEAL's and USAF Para-rescue units. As each of us go out the door we say the name of someone who did not come home. This will probably be my last year since I'm getting a little creaky and even the big soft para-wings are a little hard on my back.

I will be attending the Bengals vs Jaguars game here in beautiful Jacksonville, Florida with my twin sons and my wife. They are having a special Veterans Day celebration at the game.
Then Monday, Nov 12th, will be attending the annual Veteran's Day parade in downtown Jacksonville, it has a real down home flavor.
Last year my neighbor and I FReeped that same parade protesting Al Gore's attempt to steal the election. All the parade participants read our signs and gave us the thumbs up! It was a great time.
To all the veterans reading this reply:
Thank you for your service to our nation. We appreciate everything you have given for our freedom & liberty!
Semper Fidelis,
Norb

Sorry about the death of your brother- may he rest in peace with those veterans who served and have now gone on to their eternal reward.
My father (A Korea vet) died at age 52 from lung cancer too so I can especially relate to what you are going through. Condolences and prayers for you and your family.

all of the things you suggest are great--and will ,no doubt, be much appreciated--BUT, let us just have all americans, young and old, stop and say a thank you and a prayer for our nation--this would be all this old ww2 vet( normandy 6/6/'44) would need--you don't have to thank us, just be thankful we were around when needed

I guess I should have also mentioned, I have a living father that served in combat in WWII and Korea, as well as Viet Nam. I have always called him in gratitutde for his patriotic service in 3 wars. Not many today wear the CIB with two stars.
Thanks for your post.

I'll be dressing my Cub Scout in his uniform to march in our towns yearly Veterans day parade with his pack.
Every year his school gets the names of relatives of the children who are serving or who have served. These names are printed on paper stars and hung in the school corridors. There are a LOT of them.
My son told me that yesterday at 11:30 the principal came on the loudspeaker, asked all the children to stand and then asked them to remember all the Veterans with a moment of silence. He then played Taps.

In a few hours I will be taking my daughters to the Veteran's Day ceremony hosted by my homeowners association (last year I gave the speech, this year the speaker is a soldier who was awarded the MOH).
Unfortunatly this year I had to pick between church and the Veteran's Day ceremony (my wife will be standing up in my place though).
After that I will probably spend quite a bit of time in private reflection.
Thanks for the BUMP.
