A 72-year-old woman is one of three members of a Green Cove Springs family now in jail, accused of selling marijuana.

The Clay County Sheriff's Office arrested Elnora "Granny" Layfield, along with Michael and Linda Layfield, last Friday in their Stauffer Street home. Officer seized approximately 30 bags of marijuana valued at $1,200 from the house.

Police said that undercover officers bought marijuana at the home on four separate occasions prior to issuing a search warrant. When officers entered the home, the elder Layfield was found sitting in a living room with several bags of marijuana.

"It's unusual to find someone her age selling pot, but she's not the first and probably won't be the last," said Lt. Larry Thompson, who heads up the Clay County Drug Task Force, which co-ordinates the efforts of the sheriff's office, the Green Cove Springs and Orange Park police departments.

All three suspects were charged with possession, sale and delivery of marijuana over 20 grams, a felony with penalties of up to five years in jail upon conviction.

Elnora Layfield has two prior drug-related charges.

"Maybe a little jail time will send a stronger message to her -- because probation isn't working," Thompson said.

Marijuana is against the law and she has been on probation four times before. You can debate if marijuana should be legal or not. You think that marijuana should be legal, I don't. I beleive that marijuana is a gateway into the drug culture.

Marijuana is a gateway into the illegal drug culture because it's illegal. The effects of marijuana are a lot milder than alcohol.

I wouldn't smoke pot if it was legal unless I had a reason like pain from cancer, being spaced out isn't what I'd enjoy ---- I think it should be legal like alcohol because why should I pay taxes if I drink a beer or whatever and the potheads get by without paying taxes. I know people who smoke pot the way many have one beer, just to relax but not get very messed up and I never heard of anyone robbing a bank for pot money. It's probably not safe in large quantities though ---I'm sure it's not.

Safe to consume in large quantity but surely not safe to possess in large quantity. No one has ever OD'd on pot, but many have on alcohol.

That's your opinion, but I don't think that the US Constitution stands on the right to smoke dope anytime, anywhere.

This is a strawman. No one is suggesting that people should be able to smoke marijuana anytime anywhere. People aren't being arrested for smoking and driving or smoking and committing crimes, they're arrested for simple posession of a non-toxic plant. There can be no justification for persecuting marijuana users in a free society, and if we were a socialist society that locks up people for harming only themselves it would be the tobacco and alcohol users who got locked up. Any way you look at it marijuana prohibition makes no sense.

I have seen to much blood spilled by alcohol. People falling down stairs, driving off cliffs, drowning in their own spas, etc ect. Alcohol is a mean nasty killer. Don't get me wrong, I have an occasional beer once in a while. But unfortunately, way to many drink, and die brutal, violent deaths.

This is just like our government, to keep something like pot illegal, while continuing to sell alcohol at every intersection. It has never made any sense to me.

It only makes sense if you consider all the benefits to the government. They get billions of dollars and thousands of narcs with really cool guns. The dealers get rich and so do the Feds. The prosecutors get their paychecks. The cops get to rely on Confidential Informants instead of doing detective work, and they get to seize your assets for good measure. When you lock up a granny for selling weed, the prison industry gets more money. Everyone wins except the innocent subjects, I mean citizens.

I actually have met people who use pot who believe it should stay illegal ----just because they don't want the government to control and tax it.

I never used to get excited about the drug war before, after all it never really effected me until recently.

I was travelling to work reading the newspaper there were two articles on separate pages, one about the number of arrests for the possession of cannabis in the year 2000, around 90000. Then I read another article about the rise in street crime of young criminals being arrested and then while out on bail awaiting there trail which may not take place until at least 6 months later, committing more crime.

The reason they are not locked up well the jails are filled to bursting no more room until new jails have been built.

Also cases failing because they took such a long time to get to court because of the amount of criminal cases that are being processed.

That is when I realised that this war does effect me.

I want street thugs and house breakers arrested I want them to be remanded I want the courts to deal with them swiftly and I want tougher sentences.

This doesn’t mean I want jails on every street corner, or every second person working as a policeman, customs man, prison officer or court worker, what I want it to mean is deal with real crime, crime that involves a victim as well as a criminal.

Cheers Tony

And I suppose while they where charging her & filling out the paperwork there were several murders only a few blocks from the police station. The murderers would have got away while this was going on.

For god's sake whats wrong with the cops over there? are they too lazy to go out and catch the real criminals? Or did they spot her selling while they were on the way back to the station after buying donuts?

Come n' listen to my story 'bout a woman named "Granny",
A woman selling pot while sittin' on her fanny,
And then one day came an undercover cop,
And now it seems the jailhouse will be her next stop.
Marijuana, that is, "Mary Jane", reefer.

Well, the first thing you know, old "Granny's" in a courthouse
The judge said, Yep, I'll put you in the big house
Said, A place like Quentin is where you're gonna be
So he passed sentence on her and on her family.
Five years, that is, hard time, hoosegow.

Well now it's time to say goodbye to "Granny" and her kids
They would like to thank you folks who dropped in to buy a lid
Don't sell your smoke if they don't toke and pass along the joint
I hope this story that I tell helps to prove a point.
War on Drugs, that is, you're busted, jail cell for one

Don't get caught now, hear?

Obviously, the police are over-worked. What we need is more cops.

re : For god's sake whats wrong with the cops over there? are they too lazy to go out and catch the real criminals? Or did they spot her selling while they were on the way back to the station after buying donuts?.

I have quite a few friends who are coppers.

They told me of a system that was in place near where I live.

Near the Business centre in London there was a club that young people used to go to.

On very cold nights or if an arrest figure needed to be bumped up they use to stop clubbers as they were going in, or stop them when they were leaving, at least one two or even a few more would have a wrap of cocaine, some pills, or speed or some sort of clubbers drugs.

Then all of a sudden this practise was halted from above.

Why ?

A Liberalisation policy, no.

The decision that it was a waste of time, or that clubbers should not be arrested, no.

The need to go after other criminals well sort of.

What happened was the IRA planted a bomb in the Business centre of London, the damage caused and the loss of business amounted to millions.

Instead of arresting clubbers the city of London Police were tasked with protecting the City business centre. To do this they needed to be out and about on the street not back at the police station processing the arrest of the clubbers.

It would be nice to think that one day the government will think as highly of the people as they do the City and make sure the police are on the beat looking out for are welfare instead of processing the arrest of some individual who had some drugs on them.

Cheers Tony
