Outrage from New Hampshire! (Sickening! Bush Crashing into WTC)

Outrage from New Hampshire!

Our friends at sister site PoliticsNH.com brought this offensive political cartoon to our attention. It was drawn by Mike Mariand and printed in today's Concord Monitor.

We don't have a problem with those who criticize President George W. Bush. In fact, we've taken a few shots at the Commander-in-Chief ourselves, when we thought he deserved rebuke. But to use the horrific September 11th terrorist attack on the World Trade Center that killed almost 3,000 innocent civilians to make a political point about the president's budget is disgusting. If Mariand were drawing cartoons in 1941, would he have drawn President Franklin Roosevelt piloting one of the Japanese fighter planes that participated in the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor to convey his opinion on an issue of the day?

If you would like to tell the folks at the Concord Monitor what you think about their political cartoon, we urge you to e-mail Mark Travis, the editorial page editor at mtravis@cmonitor.com. (2/8)

He sure weasled out of that.Using the lame "censorship" excuse has become the standard cop out for editors now, and to employ it now as his reasons for not pulling something as stupid and inflammatory as this cartoon shows that this editor truly has $hit for brains.I'm glad you posted his letter, to let all see a mind doing rhetorical contortions;I just hope his advertisers get the message as well :-)

I thought Mike Pride's reply showed some class

If Mike Pride's editorial showed ANYTHING it is how completely out of touch the radical left IS.

C'mon, it was the usual viscious hate mongering piece of cr@p that if any conservative cartoonist had drawn

it would have been followed by "You'll never work in this town again!" from Mike Prides OWN Mewly MOUTH!

Class my @$$ ... he's afraid for his job is all

And yet, you are suggesting that anyone here exercising their free speech be required to move to another country, hypocrite. Pfft!

None appear to be national advertisers. One of the advertisers is the NH federation of teachers which probably got a big laugh out of it.

...a running gag to be used as contextual cage-lining for the logical mousewheel of their political dogma.

Dude, your writing's priceless!

Yep, I too stood in awe of the brilliance of that comment. Priceless indeed.

I'm harrassing him. Here's my letter in response to his self-serving little tapdance (sans music and steps):

Oh. Yes, THAT's better. I'm sure we should have been all over it by now. After all, what's a few thousand people, some of whom were from New Hampshire, most of whom were fellow Americans, all of whom were fellow human beings? Shoulda been able to shrug that off, no problem. I'm sure it's our fault for being overly-sensitve. Maybe it's the four funerals I attended, here in NH and in MA, for people who died in that tragedy. Gee, I don't know. I'm sure it's just silly of me. The little girls in Dover whose grandparents were on one of the planes should be over it by now, too, huh?

Like I said, you can go to hell. Even moreso, now.

"I thought that rejecting the cartoon would be censorship. " is probably the next most ridiculous thing in that pseudo-apology. Really? I've seen the Concord Monitor regularly, and am pretty sure that that kind of "censorship" is practiced regularly, else it would require a forklift or two to deliver it. Give us a break, Mr. Pride! We really aren't the knuckle-draggers you seem to think we are! You have to practice "censorship" on a daily basis ... only most of us would call it judgment.

Mr. Pride, if the events of September 11, 2001 are all healed up for you, I suggest you get some counselling because you are a sick puppy. I rarely hope for the destruction of careers, but yours is one I don't mind seeing go. You didn't just make a mistake -- you and your cartoonist kicked body parts around, mucked through broken hearts, and made yourselves the most hated newspaper in the country, for now. I predict that your readership will disappear ... our subscription has already been cancelled ... and you will realize that you DO have a responsibility to your readers. Or, rather, did.

Whenever I see a cartoon that I think might be too provocative, I ask myself whether the reaction I am experiencing is an impulse to edit or an impulse to censor. If it is the latter, I err on the side of publishing and resolve to take the heat if there is any.

Spineless, characterless puke.

The cartoon depicted a caricature of George Bush flying a toy plane toward the World Trade Center.

OMG! I can't believe what a mewly mouth puke this guy is! AAAAAAAAAARRRRRGH !

I suspect that he is the same type of wacko who would come down on a parent for allowing their kid to play with a "toy" gun.

Talk about trying to put a shine on a turd !

BJ, I thought Mike Pride's reply showed some class. I hope no one is E-harassing him.

That was pretty damn lame for an excuse. It was a half ass response.

I emailed him and told him so.

I am curious if he was responding to my description mentioned in my post. I called the plane in the cartoon a "toy jet" in my e-mail to him when I first discovered the cartoon on PoliticsNY.Com which got it from PoliticsNH.com. I happen to have a toy Boeing 767 jumbo jet on my work monitor with a little blue pilot that looks like the Mike Marland cartoon one.

It's called free speech. If you don't like it move to a country where it is outlawed.

You have really backed yourself into a corner this time, Demidog. Do you not see how self-contradicting this 'argument' you have posted here is?

This political cartoon is no more disgusting then the politicians who used the tragedy to assert more government power over our lives. In fact I consider those cretins the real terrorists here as they are using the fear generated by this horrific act to rush everyone into giving up their rights in the name of "safety."

Oh, I see. So you don't mind thousands of innocent people being murdered, just so long as those darn politicians don't pass any laws you don't personally find attractive.
