The parents are just as perverted as Westerfield. My guess is that the parents were out with their swinging partners and left the kid alone. Westerfield met Mrs. VD at a bar. He was told the husband was out of town. He put two and two together and realized that the parents had left the kids alone. Then he took advantage of the situation.

Mr. VD was always concerned in every interview with the press that his wife didn't talk about the "timeline." Obviously they didn't want anyone knowing that for several hours, while they were screwing around, they left their children alone in the house.
